HomeMy WebLinkAbout121003 rm min CITIZEN'S ADVISORY BOARD Minutes Wednesday, December 10, 2003 6:30 PM City Commission Conference Room PRESENT: Tom Carpenter, Nancy Roberts, Mark McCarty, Dean Ray, Brian Tooley - Chief of Police, and Gracy Posley Absent: Excused — Juanita Harold, Dave Daly, Kim Bridges, Bill Gibson, Dave Hall & Dr. Brenedette Hardy -Blake Called to Order by Chairperson Mr. Carpenter. Mr. Carpenter requested the Minutes of September 10, October 8, & November 12, 2003 be tabled due to their not being a quorum. Police Chief Tooley introduced traffic officer Tom McCall who provided a crash scene laser demonstration. This $14,000. laser equipment acquired March 2003 was donated to the Sanford Police Department via an Institute of Police Technology and Management grant drawing. The laser has the capabilities of precisely mapping (formulas are available) a crash scene, can be used as a speed detector and boom box noise measuring. This equipment is an amazing piece of technology. It creates a safer environment for officers during an accident, saving officers remarkable time in calculations and expeditious completion of crash scene reports. Chief Tooley Address CAB /SPD's Emergency Service Unit competed for the first time in the international SWAT roundup (80 teams) November 9, 2003 week. Training was great for the team, officers got the opportunity to network, and they are preparing for 2004 competition. •SPD will be replacing 80 (1988) Sig Sauers with Sig Pros. Cost effective compared to refurbishing; all officers will be equipped with a new weapon and holster. •January 3, 2003 PD's reorganization will be effective. This reorg will allow 6 patrol squads to alternate 3 days on, 3 days off, decreasing officers workload and more police will be on- duty during peak levels. Because of the reorg, the Downtown Service Center and 13 Street Community Service Center will be staffed 40 hours/week. •City Manager Greishaber has agreed to have the Smoking policy revisited regarding law officer employment. Which currently states an officer has not used tobacco products for at least one year preceding an application for employment. Expected revision to include an extended time frame reference tobacco products use. •There were no problems involving the 12/6 Christmas parade. (50-60 officers used) CAB Minutes December 10, 2003 Page 2 of 2 1140 awards given to PD employees and community members 12/03/03 held at the Sanford Woman's Club. 130 children were provided $100. each to Shop - With -A -Cop (FOP) at WalMart 12/13. During the same time Bowling Lanes were distributing gifts to children/families. ►Semi - monthly crime stats report distributed /discussed. New Business /Mr. Ray inquired if volunteers are being used regarding Sanford police cold cases? Police Chief Tooley commented not currently; cold case files are being labeled and organized. There are approximately 20 cases that are being re- created and in the process of being duplicated or scanned. ►Mr. Carpenter stated reference Ridgewood Acres apartments, when 'police are not concentrating on this complex the drugs and loitering erupt. Police Chief Tooley will communicate with the specialized unit sergeant. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:45 pm.
