HomeMy WebLinkAbout061202 rm min CITIZEN'S ADVISORY BOARD Minutes Wednesday, June 12, 2002 6:30 PM City Commission Conference Room PRESENT: Jim Kidd, Nancy Roberts, Juanita Harold, Dean Ray, Dave Daly, Dr. Brenedette Hardy- Blake, Kim Bridges, Brian Tooley - Police Chief, and Gracy Posley Absent: Excused – Dave Hall Unexcused – Tom Carpenter and Oscar Redden Called to Order by Chairperson Mr. Kidd. Mr. Kidd requested Minutes of April 10, and May 8, 2002 be adopted if there were no changes. Motioned by Mr. Ray, seconded by Mrs. Harold; Minutes were approved. Police Chief Tooley commented the May 24 George Town march (to rid the community of crime and problems) was successful. Mrs. Harold advised approximately 300 citizens attended the march that was concluded with a barbecue at Orange Ave. Park. Mrs. Harold received calls from interested residents to join George Town organization. Mr. Ray suggested scheduling another march soon to let residents know you are serious about the purpose of the march. Police Chief Tooley Address CAB — Police Chief Tooley advised members of the productive and helpful Missing and Exploited Childrens Conference he attended June 1 -3 in Alexandria, Virginia. This missing children's program provides a wealth of coordinated information in searching/finding missing and exploited children. Management and staff provide full resources for collecting and sending missing children information. Sanford Police and each agency represented at the conference received a Dell computer /printer fully equipped with missing /exploited children software and information ready for use. —Police Chief Tooley commented on the Citizens on Patrol Academy being in progress. Mr. Ray (student) stated the class (13 enrolled) is going well. Stated Officer Gary Johnson is a good instructor. Police Chief Tooley advised COPatrol vehicles are being prepared and striped. Upon COPatrol graduation, these students will be patrolling the neighborhoods. —City Attorney is reviewing a police department/police officer agreement regarding training reimbursement to the City for any officer leaving the City's employment within a two -year period. —City Attomey continues to research legal boundaries to have pay phones at 1201 Park Ave. removed. CAB Minutes June 12, 2002 Page2of2 —City Attorney drafting a prostitute ordinance that would require arrestees to pay $500. to have their vehicle returned to them if the arrest relates to prostitution. —June 28 9am police department awards ceremony to be held at the City Commission Chambers. This semi - annual ceremony will provide appropriate recognition to police employees. New Business —Dr. Hardy -Blake inquired as to how many officers were buying into the Police Officers Mortgage Assistance Program (eligible officers granted $200. -$250. of mortgage payment)? Police Chief Tooley advised several have applied and up to 35 can be eligible; the officers are excited about this program. Dr. Hardy -Blake commented the progress of the police department is very noticeable; the police department is shining. She stated citizens can see where the City has a vision. —Mrs. Harold commented how great it is officers are visiting the churches in the George Town area during their shift. —Mrs. Roberts commented she see the 1st Street sub - station is occupied by police officers. Police Chief Tooley advised the Traffic Division is now located at this office. Proper signage is being printed for mounting. A tour of the sub - station will be scheduled for CAB once the office is furnished, and officers are settled in. This building (old library) is also shared with Sanford Main Street. —Mr. Ray inquired if there were prostitution arrests during June 8 weekend? Police Chief Tooley advised of the reverse drug buy arrests at 10 St. /Pine Ave. and prostitution arrests. Police Chief Tooley commented the Special Tactical Unit is executing prostitution /drug operations and arrests frequently. Mr. Ray inquired of COPatrol assisting with July 4 fireworks. Police Chief Tooley to speak with Officer G. Johnson. There being no further business, the meeting was adjoumed at 7:15 pm.
