HomeMy WebLinkAbout021302 rm min CITIZEN'S ADVISORY BOARD Minutes Wednesday, February 13, 2002 7:00 PM Room " Conference Commission Confere ro City o PRESENT: Tom Carpenter, Nancy Roberts, Kim Bridges, Dean Ray, Juanita Harold, Brian Tooley - Police Chief, and Gracy Posley Absent: Unexcused - Manuel Acevedo Excused – Oscar Redden, Dave Hall, Dr. Brenedette Hardy - Blake, and Jim Kidd Called to Order by Vice - Chairperson Mr. Carpenter. Due to there not being a quorum, January 9 Minutes were tabled for the March 13 meeting. Police Chief Tooley introduced new members Kim Bridges and Juanita Harold. The new members gave background information on themselves. Mr. Carpenter welcomed the new members input to the Board. Dave Hall's membership expires 3/30/02. He will continue as a CAB member. Motioned by Mr. Ray, seconded by Mrs. Roberts to dismiss and replace Manuel Acevedo as a member due to his non - attendance. Police Chief Toolev Address CAB — Members informed of methamphetamine lab being operated in Sanford. In late February, SPD's Investigations Section made several arrests which shut down the operation. —Two lieutenants graduated February 15 from Southern Police Institute's Command Management Course (10 weeks). Four lieutenants have now graduated. Police Chief Tooley's goal is for every SPD command manager to graduate from this training. —Training Officer J. McAuliffe devising a 40 hour training plan for all SPD supervisors to attend. — Supervisors attended an off -site 8 hours training February 28. This training is executed at least annually, which involve supervisory discussions and group participation to increase the professionalism of all employees of the department in addition to other topics for discussion. City Manager T. VanDerworp spoke regarding his vision plan for the City. Mayor B. Lessard closed the training with positive comments about the police department's accomplishments and the City's growth. — January 21 Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade was successful. Sixty officers secured all intersections from W. 13 St. to Ft. Mellon Park. CAB Minutes February 13, 2002 Page2of2 —It is anticipated for the Downtown Community Service Center to be occupied by Sanford police by late February. —Two Seminole County deputies to have an office at Sanford Police Department. These deputies will work with the Investigations Section. New Business —Mr. Carpenter inquired, Police Chief Tooley commented the eight acres southwest of the State Farmers Market (13 St. /French Ave.) is still the possible location of a new police department. City Manager T. VanDerworp has been engrossed with other major City projects (Conference Center, etc). Police Chief Tooley advised a new police department remain to be considered. Mr. Carpenter distributed information regarding Florida's 'No Sales Solicitation Calls' law prohibiting telemarketers from attempting to sell consumer goods by telephone if a phone number appears on this list. He also provided information /procedure for canceling credit cards that have been lost/stolen to prevent stolen identity and fraud cases. -Mrs. Roberts suggested for the police department's web page to be more detailed with more interesting categories. Gave suggestions of a kids page being linked to DARE or police explorers, and other various links for police officers. Mrs. Roberts advised Police Chief Tooley she has a contact that can assist with software programs, etc. regarding the police department's crime analyzing statistics. Police Chief Tooley advised Mrs. Roberts to call Deputy Chief M. McCoy. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm.
