HomeMy WebLinkAbout101001 rm min CITIZEN'S ADVISORY BOARD Minutes Wednesday, October 10, 2001 7:00 PM Sanford Police Department PRESENT: Oscar Redden, Nancy Roberts, Phyllis Richardson, Dr. Brenedette Hardy - Blake, Jim Kidd, Tom Carpenter, David Johnson, Manuel Acevedo - Atty., Brian Tooley -Chief of Police, and Gracy Posley Absent: David Hall and Dean Ray (excused) Audience: Jerry Hargrett, Police Lieutenant Called to Order by Chairperson Mr. Redden. Mr. Redden requested Minutes of September 12, 2001 be adopted if there are no changes. Motioned by Mrs. Richardson, seconded by Mr. Johnson; Minutes were adopted. Mr. Redden presented a letter of thanks to Mrs. Richardson for her supportive CAB membership from September 1998 to October 2001. Police Chief Tooley Address CAB Police Chief Tooley advised pay phone service at the convenience store at 12 St. /Park Ave. will be inoperable from 10pm — 6am due to repeated complaints of drug sales being conducted from the phone. Police Chief Tooley explained the Exclusionary Zones regarding drug /prostitution arrests. The Judge can prohibit an arrestee from the area of an Exclusionary Zone. Sanford Police Honor Guard did an outstanding job at Retired Police Chief Ben Butler's funeral. Sheriffs Office assisted as pallbearers and with traffic. All City departments had to compile budget reductions. The police department has no restrictions on hiring sworn or civilian personnel for FY 01 -02. Police Chief Tooley advised everyone is striving to become educated in security and bio- chemicals regarding terrorist acts. The National Guard is posted at the Sanford Airport indefinitely and will be attending training from Sanford Police regarding weapons and terrorist related classes. Mr. Carpenter (with Sanford Airport Customs) displayed and commented on a knife disguised as a pen. Police Chief Tooley added other look alikes will be a challenge for security. CAB Minutes October 10, 2001 Page 2 of 2 New Business —Lt. Hargrett advised members present of the canned good drive his Squad (`A' night shift) has begun. Canned good locations are at the police department and Winn Dixie (15 St.). Lt. Hargrett and 'A' Squad have adopted a local 10 year old boy whose father passed away. The boy has been experiencing emotional and anger due to the death of his dad. The boy will be visited weekly during and after betterment. Lt. Hargrett advised of Sgt. A. Johns and Ofr. M. Bernosky responded to a car in the lake at the dead end of Palmetto Ave. The driver was attempting to elude another officer. The officers did retrieve the man from the lake, after encountering two10 feet alligator. Lt. Hargrett told of citizens whom will be receiving certificates of appreciation due to assistance they provided officers during burglary calls, etc. —Mrs. Richardson stated the STOP sign at 8 St. /Persimmon Ave. has a blind curve for drivers. Area to be surveyed by police department. —Mr. Carpenter mentioned the Veterans Memorial Park in the process of being erected at the Sanford Airport. The Memorial Park, a family park will honor all military branches from all wars. The City donated the land for this project, the Navy donated a Vigilante plane, citizens have presently donated $42,000. A $150,000. grant for construction and upkeep of the park is being applied for. Attorney Acevedo commented on remarkable response time he witnessed when an officer responded to an accident at a major intersection/light. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:45 pm, then a tour was given of the renovated Police Department.
