HomeMy WebLinkAbout091201 rm min CITIZEN'S ADVISORY BOARD Minutes Wednesday, September 12, 2001 7:00 PM City Commission Conference Room PRESENT: Oscar Redden, Dean Ray, Dave Hall, Nancy Roberts, Phyllis Richardson, Dr. Brenedette Hardy- Blake, Jim Kidd, Brian Tooley -Chief of Police, and Gracy Posley Absent: Manuel Acevedo - Atty., Tom Carpenter, and David Johnson Audience: Jerry Hargrett, Police Lieutenant Called to Order by Chairperson Mr. Redden. Mr. Redden requested Minutes of July 11, July 25, and August 8, 2001 be adopted if there are no changes. Motioned by Mr. Ray, seconded by Mr. Kidd Minutes were adopted. Police Chief Tooley introduced Lt. Jerry Hargrett of the Uniform Division to CAB members. Lt. Hargrett enlightened members of his law enforcement background, and his varied experience in other professional areas. He informed members of some police department completed and to be completed tasks he is involved with. Lt. Hargrett has initiated a community policing canned goods drive for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Winn Dixie has also agreed to match any funds raised toward this charity. Old Business — All August 8 follow -ups were completed. — Mr. Redden passed around a draft Certificate of Appreciation for CAB's approval regarding yard cleanup assistance "C" Squad of the Sanford Police Department provided to a 97 year old woman. Motioned by Mr. Ray, seconded by Mr. Kidd for Mr. Redden to present the certificate to the squad. Police Chief Tooley Address CAB Police Chief Tooley and members discussed the terrorist act of 9/11/01 involving the murder - suicide airplane mission into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. This national tragedy has heightened security worldwide. Police Chief Tooley advised of increased security measures at the Orlando- Sanford Airport and the prospect of traveling by any means will change drastically. Mr. Redden suggested a moment of silence for the terrorist victims; CAB responded silently. Mr. Redden inquired, Police Chief Tooley advised most inbound flights were routed to Canada. If planes had enough fuel they were ordered back to the airport they departed. Although difficult to locate, flags were eventually ordered for all police vehicles. Mr. Kidd inquired due to the terrorist attack would the police department be bringing in additional K9s to the Airport? Police Chief Tooley advised the police department nor the Sheriff's Office would not bring in additional K9s. It is probable FAA will have available certified K9s for all CAB Minutes September 12, 2001 Page2of2 airports. Currently Orlando International Airport has six civilian K9 corps; two of these K9s are FAA certified and available to area airports when needed. Sanford Police is now a member of Airport Law Enforcement Agencies Network (ALEAN) based in Bellevue, Washington. Conference calls are conducted monthly between law agencies and airports that provide good intelligence information. — Police Department renovations are very near completion. —Mr. Ray inquired, Police Chief Tooley advised the reopened case of Curnetha Ammons looks very promising. The investigators have done a great job. — Citizens on Patrol training program tentatively scheduled for October /November 2001. New Business — Membership expires - Dr. Hardy -Blake (10/20/01) agreed to continue membership, Mr. Kidd (10/14/01) agreed to continue membership, Mrs. Roberts (10/25/01) agreed to continue membership, Mr. Ray (11/11/01) agreed to continue membership, Mrs. Richardson (10/27/01) will not continue membership. Letter of appreciation to be given to Mrs. Richardson at October 10 meeting. —Mrs. Richardson commented regarding community policing, officers need to display a friendlier attitude toward the public, and for a citizen to feel comfortable in approaching an officer. Mr. Redden stated officers in uniform should be courteous and friendly toward the public. Mr. Redden commented when the public sees that an officer is friendly, it makes a citizen want to be of assistance to an officer when needed. Police Chief Tooley will continuance to encourage officers to provide effective customer service to the public. --Mr. Ray commented on a newspaper article regarding the Fraternal Order of Police is doing a fundraiser to purchase a K9 for the police department. Police Chief Tooley commented this was initiated by the FOP, and all questions to be directed to the FOP (Sgt. Ned Golden). —Mrs. Roberts requested the Crime Analyst to attend the October 10 meeting, if available. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:00 pm.
