Public Safety Complex 815 Historic Goldsboro Blvd., Sanford, Florida PRESENT: Helen Mausser, Joe Torresin, John Wright, arsandra Buie, Myers — Interim Police Richard M > Y Chief and Gracy Posley Absent: Betty Jack, Trace Trylko and Katheryn Alexander Audience: Sanford Citizens and Sanford Police Staff Called to Order by Ms. Mausser. Ms. Mausser welcomed and thanked all present for attending the meeting. ■Requested the Minutes of May 9, 2012 be approved if there were no changes. Motion was made by Mr. Torresin, seconded by Mr. Wright. Minutes were approved as written. Interim Chief Myers 1. CABoard applications received for interviews — 1) David Jones, Sr., District 1 2) Nancy Palmieri, District 3 2. Executive Team is increasing the focus on "customer service ". Recently invited a citizen to a Command Staff Meeting so that Staff could hear her story concerning contact with the agency a year ago. Productive and a learning experience. The idea is to get the Command Staff to see that they own customer service. 3. On May 26 swore -in two reserve officers to regular officer status. Also conducting a hiring process. The process has been tweaked to improve the selection of officers with the necessary skills and qualities for being police officers. Sanford police currently has nine vacancies due to resignations and promotions. 4. Demonstration today from In -Car Video (Panasonic Arbitrator) for the Sanford Police Department. A body - worn camera that captures evidence. Searching for funds to integrate the in -car and body -worn equipment. Through training and policy officers will know when to turn on the body -worn camera. 5. On June 7 attended the National CARE Mentoring Movement healing program regarding the Trayvon Martin tragedy. 6. The City has shown interest in developing a Citizens Academy to be held one or two times yearly. Mr. Torresin Has heard complaints from citizens that they did not get treated fairly by an officer. Citizens should also know how they should react to an officer. Chief Such an academy will provide useful training to citizens in the community. Citizen Participation 1. Citizen Please keep the skateboarders out of the parks, lakefront Memorial Park, Centennial Park. Lt. RSmith Please call the police whenever this is observed. 2. Mr. Torresin Inquired to Chief Myers how is his review going with the Police Department? Chief There is more to be reviewed regarding the Trayvon Martin shooting. Is happy with the level of communication within the Police Department. Chief will balance his time on the internally and externally business of the Police Department. Mr. Torresin How is your plan progressing? Chief Has had a lot of dialogue with the City Manager. No specific outline yet defined from the City Manager. Citizen After six months how will you make a difference? Chief Will help create an environment to make Sanford Police a better organization. Healthy change comes from those doing the work. Citizen What type programs are there for high school teens? Chief High school teens should be enjoying strong relationships with responsible adults. School Resource Officers and school faculty assist with this also. Citizen's Advisory Board June 13, 2012 Page 2 of 2 3. KConley Inquired to the Chief regarding inviting the public to a solutions -type meeting specifically for the Police Department. Chief Likes this idea. This would be instructive and a certain sequence would bring about such a meeting. 4. WChandler Commented re her history and involvement with Sanford's neighborhood watch groups. Considering reaching out to neighborhood watch coordinators and community leaders for a meeting. Chief The Department getting back to developmental ideas will be healthy. The Department is transitioning from a crisis management mode. KConley Mentioned National Night Out on August 7 and this world -wide event's connection with neighborhood watch groups. New Business •Ms. Mausser — introduced Jaimon Perry (County Court Judge candidate). Attorney Perry — gave a brief background history of himself. Commented he is a candidate for the County Court Judge position. Urged all to vote for him on August 14, 2012. Stated, "everyone in the criminal justice system should be treated with respect and dignity ". There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:50 P.M.
