Police and Fire Headquarters PRESENT: Helen Mausser, Joe Torresin, Betty Jack, Katheryn Alexander, Trace Trylko, John Wright, Steve Esler, Carsandra Buie, Steve Harriett- Interim Police Chief and Gracy Posley Absent: Steve Chusmir Audience: Commissioners P. Mahany and Mr. McCarty, City Manager T. George, A. McCollough, W. Chandler, Mr. Chang, and City Residents Called to Order by Ms. Mausser. Ms. Mausser requested the Minutes of December 8, 2010 be approved if there were no changes. Motioned by Ms. Buie, seconded by Mrs. Alexander the Minutes were approved as written. Old Business / Follow -Ups ■ Sanford Police Department website (www.sanfordpolice.org) Citizen's Advisory Board section has been update. Updates will continue. Chief Harriett Address CAB • Provided law enforcement background and Sanford history of himself. Signed an Inter -Local Agreement with the City of Sanford until a new Police Chief is hired. ■ An administrative investigation by the Sheriff's Office is being done regarding the Justin Collison's assault on a homeless man. The investigation will be shared in detail with the public upon completion. ■ His ultimate goal as Interim Police Chief is to reduce crime. Crime prevention is economical. ■ SP.D. not only to be proactive, but co- active in working with the community. Officers will solve problems, not just treat the symptoms. ■ The quality of life rest upon law enforcement services received. Leadership is needed by all. Officers change lives one call at a time. • Sanford Police image will consist of 1) visibility 2) responsive (swiftly, safely) 3) professional conduct, speech and appearance in dress attire and fleet and 4) results oriented (follow -up), crime solvers, not just crime takers. • Currently meeting with and will conclude meeting with all small groups and with every employee at the Police Department. New Business Questions and answers were opened to the audience. Citizens from the audience questions and concerns were addressed by Chief Harriett, City officials, Board members, etc. present. ■ (T. Foster) Commented ensure officers are accountable for their actions and to do their job. (Chief) Would like it to be the exception re an unfortunate incident. Procedures are in place. Personnel will be addressed accordingly regarding such matters. ■ (M. Dixon) Commented for officers to establish a relationship with citizens in the community. (Chief) Want officers to do roll reversal; one on one personal interactions with citizens. ■ (Citizen) Inquired re alcoholic beverages outside of bars and noise level. (Mr. Trylko) Inquired re officer visibility outside of bars. (Chief) These items are being discussed. ■ (Citizen) Sanford Police Department is not broken. Would like the current and next administration to continue moving forward. Citizen's Advisory Board January 12, 2011 Page 2 of 2 ■ (Mr. Esler) Commented Kay's Landing has little response from Sanford police. Inquired re Kay's Landing traffic enforcement Agreement with SP.D. ■ (Commr. McCarty) Inquired re internet cafe gambling. (Chief) City ordinance cannot prohibit, but is trying to regulate it. ■ (Mr. Torresin) Inquired of Police Chief vacancy update. Mr. George commented presently seventy -three applications have been received and the deadline is extended through mid February. (Mr. Torresin) Would like CABoard to review external completed complaints. (Chief) Wants to start using a customer service survey to victims. This is an effective tool designed to catch officers doing good. There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:50 P.M. Minutes prepared by Gracy Posley, CABoard Secretary.
