Hodgins Carole Hinshaw Valada Flewellyn Joshua Dane Mark McCarty, Museum Liaison, Sanford City Commissioner Julie Ellenburg, Secretary Alicia Clarke, Curator Absent: Charlie Carlson- excused Meeting was called to order at 4:40PM at the Sanford Museum by Chairman Lee. • The minutes of the October 2, 2012 meeting were approved as written. Old Business Ms. Clarke said there had been no progress on collecting videos made in Sanford. She said there is a need, as discussed in a previous meeting, to document the neighborhood on West First Street. Ms. Best said this was the St. Gertrude neighborhood and many of the houses are gone. Old houses on the north end of French Avenue were discussed. They discussed the two historic houses across from McDonald's. Mr. Lee said the owner of these houses also owns two Sears houses on Celery Avenue at Locust that need to be rescued. Ms. Clarke said these threatened houses and others need to be photographed. She said she would look into having the Sanford Historic Trust help with photographing disappearing buildings outside the historic district. It was suggested the old Police Department should be photographed. Ms. Hinshaw told the members about her visit to historic Newcastle, Delaware. She noted Floridians do not appreciate the importance of preservation. Ms. Best suggested the board members snap photos with their phones when they see an endangered or overlooked house. Ms. Clarke said someone recently asked about a house behind the hospital. Mr. Lee said a house behind the hospital on SR46 was torn down in 1996. Ms. Hinshaw suggested making a list of areas to target for photographs. Ms. Best suggested going down Riverview (old West First) off of West First Street. Mr. Hodgins said he • lived at 207 S. French Avenue and remembers the houses in the area of French Avenue near where the Burger King is now. Mr. Lee said he would arrange to interview Mr. Hodgins about these houses. Sanford Museum Advisory Board Meeting • January 8, 2013, page 2 Ms. Clarke asked the members to review the museum's webpage on the city's website when they had a chance. The board discussed the value of QR codes for publicity and education. The city has started adding these to educational materials. Ms. Clarke said the city had started using social media. Commissioner McCarty said the city had joined Facebook. He noted the value of short videos on social media and websites. A discussion of collecting dead media and old technology followed. Ms. Clarke said the museum is still seeking a computer floppy disk. Mr. Hodgins said he owns an old manual typewriter that he could donate. The need for a moderately sized community meeting room as part of phase 2 of the Fort Mellon improvements was discussed. This would meet the basic needs of the museum. Commissioner McCarty suggested looking into the museum having a meeting room that could be used to show educational films to visitors. Some museum supporters have suggested constructing a nearby meeting room without adding directly onto the museum. Ms. Clarke reviewed the museum expansion plans as they were proposed. Commissioner McCarty asked to see these plans. Ms. Clarke noted the potential benefactors for this project have died. • A discussion followed of locating past news coverage of Sanford. Commissioner McCarty suggested contacting local news stations. It was suggested this could be a project for UCF students. Election of Officers: It was moved and seconded that the following be elected as board officers for 2013: Christine Kinlaw Best, Chairman; Jim Lee, Vice Chairman; and Carole Hinshaw, Secretary. Approved by unanimous consent. New Business The calendar for 2013 -14 was set. Meetings will continue to be held at 4:30pm. The meeting dates will be April 2, July 2, October 1, 2013 and January 7, 2014. Ms. Clarke told the members about the new Goldsboro Welcome Center at 1216 Historic Goldsboro Blvd. Ms. Best reminded the members about the county centennial celebration on April 20.
