Lee, Chairman Mark McCarty, Sanford City Commissioner ✓ -Y /'/ Julie Ellenburg, Secretary Meeting was called to order at 5:00PM at the Sanford Museum by Vice Chairman Best. The minutes of the April 3, 2012 meeting were approved as written. • Old Business The Sanford Museum and the Sanford Historical Society have committed to participating in the Museum of Seminole County History's centennial celebration in April 2013. The celebration will begin in January 2013 with various events around the county and there will be a large event on April 20. Historic Seminole will be developing a passport to the county's museums that will highlight events on Saturdays from January to April. The Museum of Seminole County History is collecting memories and photos of the county and Jim Robison is writing a county history. Mr. Carlson suggested contacting SGTV about the film footage they have taken in recent years about the history of Seminole County. He recalled being interviewed for one video called "Beyond City Limits." The Sanford Museum has been asked for city trivia for Seminole Moments on SGTV. Ideas for the April 20 event were discussed. It was decided to create a panel display about Sanford in 1913 that would also include a list of Sanford "firsts." It was suggested that the display include ads from 1913 and national news of the time. It should include the plans for the bulkhead, Woodland Park, and the county fair. Mr. Carlson suggested reproducing the 1910 Celery Edition of the Sanford Herald and having it for sale during the centennial. He suggested emphasizing that Sanford is "Where Central Florida . History Began." He also suggested giving away celery since this was done at the old fairs. Everyone agreed that celery should be the decorating theme for the museum's tent. ,Th '‘' 1 • A'• i• /}/---)- A , 1 ,„ _lc...4 . , / ,,. .„, .,,,,,,, , 7 / - / e / /—'.,'( - — , /./ .' . / .- ' , . . ., . / `-./._.:, — C 0 i • c•, , /./. ,t' , -,1 ‹:1,' [.. :- Al 44 --- / :'/ ) . ,.- .4 ., / i l . 5 7),-/- e‘: / z , . , .t-' !(- 4/ ( ')(7/ (51 4 — / y , 1 ,' , , 0 A --/ ,: 7/6 c , „2/ . :. ,, / ,;, , .. /Y :; - :., ,- ,; .- f, i! - _ ,.,5 n . -4 r, ., / /-1 / 0 ../ // 6,-,, / , ', .) ; / cv c. A discussion of the different county courthouses followed. New Business The museum is trying to find information about Arnold Palmer playing in Sanford. It is believed he may have played in Sanford during his first year on the PGA tour. The Sanford Museum has sent historical information and photos to the Florida League of Cities for the Viva Florida 500 website. Since Viva Florida 500 can include any event in the past 500 years, the county centennial will probably be included in this statewide celebration. Mr. Carlson suggested the museum consider a centennial exhibit of 100 years of bad news which would include all the sensational death and disaster in Sanford's past. Since the county observance is including dates before 1913, this could include the Big Fire of 1887 and the Great Freeze. Ms. Oliver announced the Goldsboro Historical Museum will be hosting a community art festival on Historic Goldsboro Boulevard on October 27, 2012. The event is called Goldsboro Takes Center Stage and will include a tribute to City Commissioner Velma Williams on October 26. This event will reintroduce Goldsboro to Sanford. The museum • is also working to acquire a building across the street that can be used for education and meetings. The possibility of producing museum ads on business cards was discussed. These could be done for several museums to easily give the public the hours of operation and admission fees. Ms. Oliver shared her experience with Facebook. She said museum should be careful to allow only limited public access to their pages or they will be overwhelmed with comments. Ms. Best suggested everyone look at the Facebook sites "I grew up in Sanford" and "We grew up in Sanford." There are hundreds of photos on these pages. The next meeting will be October 2, 2012 at 4:30PM There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:15PM.
