Hodgins Stephen Wright James Ross Lee Valada Flewellyn Alicia Clarke, Curator Julie Ellenburg, Secretary Absent: Grace Marie Stinecipher- excused Patty Swann - excused Serena Fisher - excused Commissioner Mark McCarty- excused Meeting was called to order at 4:37PM at the Sanford Museum by Chairman James Ross Lee. The minutes of the January 11, 2011 were reviewed and approved with one correction. Mr. Lee has lived in Sanford for 12 years instead of 11. Ms. Clarke said Commissioner Mark McCarty has been appointed board liaison. Commissioner McCarty could not attend this meeting due to a conflict with another meeting. He said he will attend the next meeting. Old Business Ms. Clarke passed out the board member contact list. Ms. Clarke updated the board about the UCF RICHES (Regional Initiative for Collecting the History, Experiences, and Stories of Central Florida) Project. She said Sanford was chosen as the first city to be featured on the RICHES website which will launch in July. The history of Sanford will include maps, and pictures. The museum has been working with UCF history graduate students since January. The museum has also worked with the Central Florida Memory project and IT Department at UCF. Central Florida Memory has scanned photographs, maps, 1920s Chamber of Commerce brochures, most of the museum's collections of the Sanfly, (the NAS Sanford newspaper), and the entire register from the Florida Land and Colonization Company. The UCF students have been visiting the Sanford Museum on a weekly basis. To view some of the documents and better understand the project, board members were encouraged to go online to Central Florida Memory Project. The museum has had requests for the end dates of buildings downtown. The files do not contain many photos of demolition or dates of destruction. Recently several buildings have been taken down before the museum could get a photo. Ms. Ellenburg w • • recommended contacting Jo Ann Johnson in the Building Department. Perhaps the PO museum can be copied on demolition permits issued. That would allow the Museum staff to take photos of historic buildings prior to demo. Mr. Wright recommended taking photos of the Star theater building located at 13 and Sheppard Avenue. On a related topic, Mr. James Ross Lee said he had taken pictures of the locations from Larry the Cable Guy's filming in Sanford. One location was Doug's at 11` and Sanford Avenue. He will provide the museum with copies of the photos. The museum has files on locally made films but catching the action of filming has been difficult. New Business Ms. Clarke said Dr. Connie Lester of the UCF History Department applied for a grant on behalf of the Sanford Museum and was declined due to not asking for enough money. Dr. Lester advised Ms. Clarke that she was going to resubmit the grant application. The money would be used to evaluate and scan the H.S. Sanford papers. The board discussed term limits and looked at the by laws. Ms. Clarke said she would research the board's ordinance and by laws to find the original term limits and requirements for serving. Documenting the Sanford/Rochester connection was discussed. "Goin' North," the catalog of an exhibition held in Rochester years ago, is now online. This will be reviewed for leads and Ms. Clarke will find out if the new historical society in Goldsboro will be reprinting it. Ms. Clarke told the board about new connections being made between the museum and Amsterdam, New York, the home of Henry Sanford's descendants. The Sanford Historical Society has joined two Amsterdam historical groups to find more information about living Sanford descendants. The City recently held a seminar on Florida's Sunshine Laws. These laws will be discussed at the July meeting. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:37PM. • •
