Old Business
Ms. Clarke updated the board on the Amtrak exhibit. Due to air conditioning issues at
the Museum the displays were taken down in August. She said the staff would be
working on the displays and making the changes recommended by the board.
The museum staff is providing some research assistance to the Celery Soup project,
particularly the history of the Princess Theater on First Street. The production will be
performed there in late October. Ms. Flewellyn gave a synopsis of the play which is
titled "Touch and Go." She said working on this production has been a moving
experience for many cast members.
The board welcomed new member James Ross Lee. All board members introduced
themselves to Mr. Lee. Mr. Lee stated that he had lived in Sanford for 16 years and is in
real estate.
Ms. Clarke reminded the board that the date and time of the meetings is set in January.
Ms. Clarke updated the board on the museum's involvement in the city's cemetery
database. Information from burial records, card files and ledgers for the city's cemeteries
• has now been entered into CIMS (Cemetery Information Management System) software.
The museum answers inquiries about the cemeteries several times a week. The new
system will allow additional material, such as obituaries and deeds, to be added to each
file.
The Sanford Historical Society has paid for 55 grave markers to be placed on graves in
Evergreen Cemetery that only had deteriorating metal markers.
Mr. Wright asked about the status of the memorial for Page Jackson Cemetery. Ms.
Clarke said she would have an answer at the January meeting.
Ms. Clarke was asked for an update on the Fort Mellon Park memorial bench for Millard
Hunt. Ms. Clarke will check with the Parks Department and have an answer at the
January meeting.
New Business
Ms. Clarke said Carole Hinshaw has applied for a position on the board.
Ms. Clarke updated the board on projects with UCF. Dr. Connie Lester has spoken with
the museum about projects for students in Economic History. The museum staff hopes to
have interns from the History Department's RICHES project. RICHES will create a
website with the history of Sanford that will have links to all kinds of research materials.
• Eventually, RICHES will be an online gateway for research on Central Florida.
Social networking on the Internet was discussed. The success of the "I grew up in
Sanford and I'm not ashamed to admit it" page has shown that many Sanford natives of
Baby Boomer age use Facebook to share memories. The Sanford Historical Society is
considering launching a Facebook page to give the museum a presence there and to
attract a younger audience. Ms. Best suggested having a "day in Sanford history" item on
a Facebook page. A computer will be set up at the January meeting so all members may
see Facebook.
Ms. Clarke reminded the board of the new City Hall hours and of the Christmas break.
Ms. Best noted the board will need a new chairman in January.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:30PM.
