Old Business
Ms. Clarke said National Train Day was a success with 289 visitors. There were an
unexpected number of families with small children. Amtrak provided souvenirs and a
conductor to greet visitors. Ms. Clarke asked for suggestions to make the Auto Train
exhibit more eye catching. It was suggested a banner be placed between the lobby
columns and that a mannequin wearing a conductor uniform be positioned next to a
column to welcome visitors. Commissioner Woodruff suggested a crossing sign in the
center of the lobby. Flashing lights were suggested by Ms. Best. Mr. Carlson suggested
placing luggage next to the scale and moving the mannequins to that side of the lobby.
Mr. Wright suggested a guide to the objects in the exhibit.
The board discussed vacancies. The following names were suggested as possible board
members: Carol Hinshaw of UCF, Trish Thompson of Creative Sanford, and Henry
Sweet.
New Business
Ms. Clarke told the board about an article being written by Ken Murdoch, an area
railroad historian. She would like to have a special series of talks about railroads. She
asked for suggestions for presentations. Ms. Ellenburg offered to create a Powerpoint
slideshow on railroads using photos from the museum's collection. Ms. Swann suggested
• finding out about the local man who runs a small railroad at special events. A series of
presentations about private collections was discussed. Having a walking tour of railroad
sites downtown and a presentation on Rails to Trails the same day was suggested by Ms.
Fisher.
Commissioner Woodruff suggested having a talk or special presentation in conjunction
with Celery Soup. Ms. Flewellyn suggested a Tea and Tell for railroad people. She also
said she would ask the Celery Soup board for suggestions for the museum's participation.
The script for this year's production may be emphasizing Sanford's resilience.
Commissioner Woodruff suggested an exhibit on the disasters of Sanford. A long
discussion of this subject followed. Ms. Best mentioned the destruction of the celery
crop by a disease called rust. Ms. Flewellyn asked for a list of disasters. She also asked
what disaster brought people together, particularly the black and white communities. Mr.
Carlson said the communities looked out for each other because of their interdependence.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:50PM.
