Hodgins Grace Marie Stinecipher Stephen Wright Charlie Carlson Valada Flewellyn Art Woodruff, Commission Liaison Alicia Clarke, Curator Julie Ellenburg, Secretary Anita Filardi, Guest Meeting was called to order at 4:35PM at the Sanford Museum by Chairman Best. The minutes of the April 6, 2010 were reviewed and approved with one correction. An • "e" will be added to "Jess" in the paragraph referring to Jesse L. Brown. Old Business Ms. Clarke said National Train Day was a success with 289 visitors. There were an unexpected number of families with small children. Amtrak provided souvenirs and a conductor to greet visitors. Ms. Clarke asked for suggestions to make the Auto Train exhibit more eye catching. It was suggested a banner be placed between the lobby columns and that a mannequin wearing a conductor uniform be positioned next to a column to welcome visitors. Commissioner Woodruff suggested a crossing sign in the center of the lobby. Flashing lights were suggested by Ms. Best. Mr. Carlson suggested placing luggage next to the scale and moving the mannequins to that side of the lobby. Mr. Wright suggested a guide to the objects in the exhibit. The board discussed vacancies. The following names were suggested as possible board members: Carol Hinshaw of UCF, Trish Thompson of Creative Sanford, and Henry Sweet. New Business Ms. Clarke told the board about an article being written by Ken Murdoch, an area railroad historian. She would like to have a special series of talks about railroads. She asked for suggestions for presentations. Ms. Ellenburg offered to create a Powerpoint slideshow on railroads using photos from the museum's collection. Ms. Swann suggested • finding out about the local man who runs a small railroad at special events. A series of presentations about private collections was discussed. Having a walking tour of railroad sites downtown and a presentation on Rails to Trails the same day was suggested by Ms. Fisher. Commissioner Woodruff suggested having a talk or special presentation in conjunction with Celery Soup. Ms. Flewellyn suggested a Tea and Tell for railroad people. She also said she would ask the Celery Soup board for suggestions for the museum's participation. The script for this year's production may be emphasizing Sanford's resilience. Commissioner Woodruff suggested an exhibit on the disasters of Sanford. A long discussion of this subject followed. Ms. Best mentioned the destruction of the celery crop by a disease called rust. Ms. Flewellyn asked for a list of disasters. She also asked what disaster brought people together, particularly the black and white communities. Mr. Carlson said the communities looked out for each other because of their interdependence. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:50PM. 1
