Hodgins Grace Marie Stinecipher Stephen Wright Valada Flewellyn Art Woodruff, Commission Liaison Alicia Clarke, Curator Julie Ellenburg, Secretary Henry Sweet, Guest Molly Bush Pflueger, Guest Absent: Charlie Carlson Meeting was called to order at 4:35PM at the Sanford Museum by Chairman Best. The minutes of the January 5, 2010 were reviewed and approved as written. • The meeting dates for the remainder of the year were reviewed. They are July 5 and October 4. Old Business The board discussed vacancies and term changes. The residency requirement may be waived for candidates for board positions at the discretion of the City Commission. Term limits remain in place but a member may continue to serve on the board until a replacement is found. Ms. Best said her term as chairman is ending and asked for recommendations or volunteers. Serena Fisher, Stephen Wright, and Charlie Carlson declined. Item was tabled. New Business Ms. Clarke told the board about "Pride and Passion," an exhibit at UCF about African Americans in baseball. The Sanford Museum has sent items about Tim Raines and Jackie Robinson to UCF for the exhibit. Ms. Clarke said the museum is working with the Parks Department of the City to mark the unplotted single graves in the 1 s ` Addition of Evergreen Cemetery. Many graves have nothing but a metal funeral home marker. The Sanford Historical Society is donating the funds to pay for small stone name markers. • New Business Ms. Clarke said the museum has applied to be a location for the celebration of National Train Day on May 8. This event marks the anniversary of the driving of the golden spike, completing the transcontinental railroad. The museum will have an exhibit on the Auto Train and an open house that day. The local Amtrak staff and retirees will assist with the event. The board discussed railroad collectors and groups to contact. They discussed a group of retired railroad employees called "Penny Pinchers." Ms. Best said she knew of the widow of a local railroad employee who was seeking a home for his collection of schedules. Several members volunteered to help with the event. Ms. Pflueger suggested contacting Leslie Bernard, a professional designer for help. Ms. Pflueger and Laura Green, former Auto Train employees, will be helping with the exhibit. The exhibit will be on display for a year and will have items added as the year goes on. It was suggested that someone be available to interview railroad employees who attend the train day event. The possibility of a railroad "Tea and Tell" day was discussed to collect oral history. Ms. Clarke said the annual Navy reunion will be held at the end of June. The museum needs a system to collect information from veterans who visit during that weekend and throughout the year. Ms. Flewellyn has been working with a local veteran as part of her ongoing exhibit about African American Navy aviator Jess L. Brown. The exhibit will be on display at the airport. On May 1, Thomas Hudner, the man who attempted to rescue Brown will be given the key to the city. Ms. Flewellyn will also be interviewing Capt. Hudner and local veteran Jerry Bohm about • Brown. Brown's squadron #32 was stationed briefly in Sanford. The exhibit will go to Pensacola next. Ms. Clarke is compiling a history of Touhy Park for the Parks Department. She is seeking any information and photographs about the historic trees planted there. Ms. Fisher suggested contacting Shirley Muse at the Student Museum for information from their files. The Page Jackson Cemetery marker project has been delayed until a location can be approved. Mr. Wright said an article about Zora Neale Hurston just appeared in the New York Times. It mentioned Sanford and the cemetery. Ms. Fisher told the board about the Gardens Around the Parks event on May 1 which will include a May Day celebration at the Student Museum. Commissioner Woodruff told the board the Commission has selected a bench with a plaque as a memorial for Millard Hunt to recognize his contributions to the park. He asked the board to think of an appropriate date for the dedication of the bench. The city's birthday in September was suggested. Ms. Clarke said the museum was changing out light bulbs throughout the building with more efficient "green" bulbs. She asked for other energy saving suggestions.
