Meeting was called to order at 5:20 PM at the Sanford Museum by Chairman Best.
The minutes of the January 6 meeting were reviewed and approved as written.
• Ms. Clarke went over the fee schedule that was approved by the City Commission meeting on
January 12, 2009. The fees were set by the City for photocopies and research assistance. More
than $100 has been collected since the fee schedule was implemented in February. Ms. Clarke
said the staff will track the amounts received but she did not know where the money would go.
Perhaps the money can be used for projects.
A draft of a museum brochure, designed by Julie Ellenburg, was handed out to Board Members
for corrections and or additions. The Board commended Julie Ellenburg on her work.
The museum staff has set a jar for suggested donations for research assistance in the research
room. The suggested donation is $5.00. There has been a good response so far.
Ms. Clarke asked Board Members for ideas on a way to track research and media requests
received in person, by email or by telephone. She said the museum needs to do a better job at
keeping statistics for required benchmarking. The staff has always kept a count of visitors but not
of requests for assistance. The attendance from January to March was 958.
Ms. Swann said Trish Thompson, former owner of the Rib Ranch, is now with Seminole County
Arts Council and could distribute museum brochures.
Ms. Clarke said the museum received thousands of negatives from the Sanford Herald during the
newspaper's recent move. The negatives date from 1973 to the present. Ms. Clarke asked the
Board to help her find students or other volunteers to help organize the negatives. It was
• suggested she contact UCF.
• Ms. Clarke asked for ideas for a monument to be placed in Page Jackson Cemetery to
memorialize the unknown people buried there. Ms. Clarke passed around a memorial piece
written by Stephen Wright. Commissioner Woodruff passed around photos of memorial rocks
with plaques. Marc Hultin in Parks and Grounds Operations is researching this type of memorial
for use in Fort Mellon Park. The staff will get the prices from him. Jan Henry in Parks and
Grounds Operations has suggested a location for the memorial at the fork in Hardy Avenue. Ms.
Clarke also mentioned that all the older cemeteries in Sanford need historical markers.
Ms. Stinecipher asked Commissioner Woodruff for an update on the term limits of board
members. He said members have no ending term at present but an ordinance is being proposed.
Ms. Flewellyn updated the Board on the Celery Soup Ball and said the event was a huge success.
Ms. Flewellyn invited board members to the Tea & Tell Event at Hopper Academy on Saturday,
April 18` There will be two sessions held 11 -1 PM and 2 -4PM. There will be line catchers
available to record tellers' stories during group and private sessions.
The status of the new park facilities in Fort Mellon Park was discussed. A memorial for Millard
Hunt was discussed and the Board Members said a garden spot in the park near the museum
might be appropriate.
Dr. Wright asked Commissioner Woodruff about looking into cleaning up the old post office that
is now used as a Parks building across from the Sanford Civic Center.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:10pm.
