Meeting was called to order at 5:20pm at the Sanford Museum by Chairman Christine
Kinlaw Best. / td , 1G131.
• There being no corrections to the minutes of the April meeting, the minutes were
approved as written. (/r' d
Serena Fisher gave an update on the Student Museum. The demolition of the lunchroom
was denied by the City Commission because of its historic importance. The School
Board said state law does not allow them to spend money on this building and that the
building does not meet state requirements for a school facility. The Sanford Woman's
Club, the group that raised the original funds for the building, presented a letter
supporting the demolition. Their records indicate it was not the first lunchroom in the
state but the first in the county. There is no staff at the museum during the summer.
School tours will begin in the Fall. The visiting teachers will be guiding their groups this
year. A virtual tour is being filmed for the teachers to use for training. At this time there
are no plans to have the museum open for the general public or for special events.
The chairman gave an update on the Museum of Seminole County History. The museum
is now open 12-4 Wednesday- Friday, Saturday 9 -1. A new part time coordinator has just
been hired for 20 hours per week.
The board discussed research at the Student Museum. Shirley Muse is the volunteer
cataloging the collection. She is at the museum on Thursdays. There are many
photographs in this collection that are available for research. The Sanford Museum needs
to learn more about what is in this collection and what the plans are for this material.
• Ms. Clarke will contact Shirley Muse.
1111 Ms. Clarke updated the board about the annual Navy Reunion. Attendance was lower
this year possibly due to travel costs. The museum had many Navy veterans visit just
prior to the reunion weekend but not many during the reunion. The staff completed the
new Navy exhibit in the Chase Gallery for the reunion. Ms. Clarke noted these reunions
led to the creation of the museum's Navy archives. This material is now used year round
by visiting veterans.
Ms. Clarke said attendance figures for families with children had increased during the
summer possibly because some summer programs had been cancelled and the public
library is now closed on Friday.
Dr. Wright said the Gwendolyn Brooks event was a success with more than 45 people. It
was held at Tajiri Arts. This may be the venue in future as well.
Dr. Wright said there are many prominent families in Orlando that began in Sanford.
Some of these descendants now live in "new Sanford" on the west side of town. Ms.
Best suggested the museum should be researching these families and contacting them for
historical information. Tico Perez was specifically mentioned as someone to contact
about his Sanford background. Dr. Wright suggested having a homecoming event to
bring these families back to Sanford. He also mentioned he has John Krider's typewriter
and would be willing to donate it. Dr. Wright said he had collected many Sanford
• historical items.
Ms. Clarke gave an update on the building expansion project. The economy is slowing
progress on finding funding for this. The Sanford Historical Society's building
committee, chaired by Millard Hunt, met with a representative of Jeno Paulucci. There
was no interest at this time.
The city's budget was discussed. Ms. Best sent a letter to museum liaison Art Woodruff
encouraging continued support for the museum.
Ms. Clarke gave an update on Page - Jackson Cemetery. The city was considering taking
in the abandoned portion of the cemetery but a private owner came forward and this
stopped the process.
The chairman suggested all members tour the new exhibit in the Chase Gallery. The
board noted the efforts by Patty Swann to complete this exhibit.
Ms. Clarke said the home of Randall and Julia Chase has been sold. The family has
already donated some significant items found in the house. It is hoped more material will
be donated in the future. Fred Trammell, a Chase cousin, is the local contact for the
family.

Small Town South was discussed. The Sanford Historical Society is working on a project
to reprint the book, since many residents have heard about the controversy over the
publication of this book in the 1940s but many people have never seen a copy. This
project should be completed in the Fall.
The new Kingsnake Records exhibit was discussed. A fundraising project with Sonja
Greenlee, widow of Kingsnake founder Bob Greenlee, is being pursued by the Sanford
Historical Society. Mrs. Greenlee has offered to donate blues cds to sell as a fundraiser
and perhaps have an event with the Kingsnake All Stars band.
It was suggested the museum staff start tracking the amount of time spent with
researchers and record this in addition to attendance.
Ms. Best reported Dr. Mark Long's UCF dissertation has been published. It includes
extensive references to the museum staff and The Swedish History of Seminole County.
Ms. Best also showed the board Stanley by Tim Jeal. The author refers to the museum
and the Sanford Papers. She also showed the board These Stones by Martha Scott Lew, a
book about the CMC church. It also credits the museum. /. (2U `Pbs' ithz-
Ms. Clarke told the board Dr. Tiffany Patterson from Vanderbilt University was currentl
doing research on the Congo and Florida at the museum.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:50pm.
