Wright Art Woodruff, Commission Liaison Alicia Clarke, Museum Curator Absent: • Serena Fisher Guests: Dottie Carlson Vincent Best The meeting was called to order at 5:30 pm. The minutes of the January 8, 2008 were approved as written. Old Business The museum started its 2008 lecture series on March 26 with Valada Flewellyn presenting the Goldsboro film at the North Branch of the public library. Advertising for this program was limited and targeted the historic district businesses and residents. Advertising by email proved to be successful since emails get passed on. There was a good turnout of 17 people but 5pm was determined to be too early for most interested parties. The time had been chosen to appeal to a senior audience. Bram Towers will be contacted directly about a program on site there. Ms. Flewellyn reported she had received an invitation to present her program at 1' Baptist Church on April 7. The Sanford Historic Trust is also interested. Ms. Flewellyn suggested showing the film during an Alive after Five. • 1 • Art Woodruff updated the board on the status of the Student Museum. It will cost 1.5 million for immediate repairs. No announcement has been made about possible closing. New Business Ms. Clarke reported on her recent trip on the Autotrain. She commented on the poor condition of the Sanford station and waiting area on Persimmon Ave. Commissioner Woodruff explained that the station, exit, Persimmon and SR46 are all under different governing authorities. It is a complicated situation. Ms. Clarke said there was no location in Lorton to advertise Sanford. She also noted that there are few directional signs to the Sanford Autotrain station. Commissioner Woodruff said the station is part of the plans for commuter rail and many issues will be addressed with this project. Ms. Clarke said Autotrain passengers have until 2pm to check in so they have several hours to keep their car and see Sanford if they arrive in the morning. Ms. Stinecipher asked about board term limits. Commissioner Woodruff said the City Commission had not made a final decision. The annual Naval Air Station Sanford reunion is June 26-29. The museum will have an open house during event. Ms. Best said there is no brick for Capt Charles Mellon and no mention of the Indian • Wars in Veterans Memorial Park. Ms. Clarke said she would look into it. Ms. Best announced the Springfest at the Student Museum would be held Saturday, April 19. She encouraged everyone to go. Ms. Flewellyn announced there would be a workshop for the Celery Soup project on April 24. This workshop will train "Line Catchers." She explained that a "Line Catcher" is someone who collects stories by recording oral history. The Celery Soup project will also have oral history events called "Talks in the Stalks." The museum will be assisting with the Celery Soup project A lecture by local author Frederic Hitt was discussed. The museum has scheduled a presentation by him at the North Branch of the library on May 15. Dr. Wright announced a poetry reading and celebration by the Gwendolyn Brooks Writers Association of Florida on June 7. It will be held downtown. The Chairman announced Linda Silsby Hitt will be resubmitting an application for the vacant position on the board. Ms. Clarke said the museum will be scanning Elvira Garner's books for UCF's Central Florida Memory Project. The museum will also be providing some materials for a temporary exhibit about Florida baseball at UCF in the Fall. A brief discussion followed • about books in the public domain that the museum could scan. Ms. Best said the 2 • copyright for Small Town South was never renewed, so it has already been digitized and is available online. Ms. Clarke said the museum is searching for information on the Mayfair Country Club. Oral tradition in town says the golf course was designed by noted landscape architect Donald Ross. No documented proof of a connection between Ross and Sanford has been found. The Donald Ross Society has removed Mayfair from its list of accepted Ross courses because of this lack of proof.
