HomeMy WebLinkAbout04032007 SMAB mins 1 Sanford Museum Advisory Board • Meeting April 3, 2007 5:15 pm Present: Grace Marie Stinecipher, Chairman Christine Best Charlie Carlson Serena Fisher Paul F. Hodgins Patty Swann Art Woodruff, Commission Liaison Alicia Clarke, Curator Absent: Janice Springfield The meeting was called to order at 5:20pm in the meeting room at the Sanford Museum. The chairman asked that an addition be made to the minutes of the January 16, 2007, meeting stating the offices to which officers had been elected. The addition reads as • follows: "Grace Marie Stinecipher, Chairman; Christine Best, Vice - Chairman; Serena Fisher, Secretary." Old Business Board Vacancies Chairman Stinecipher asked for an update on names suggested to fill the two board vacancies. Art Woodruff reported that Dr. Stephen Caldwell Wright was interested in serving as was one of the granddaughters of the late Nell Snow. Linda Silsby Hitt expressed interest. Others to be contacted include Jim Anderson, Don Tise, and Carol Kirchoff. Commissioner Woodruff reported the City Commission was considering revising qualifications for membership on city boards. Membership might be restricted to individuals living in the city of Sanford or owning businesses within the city limits. Membership on city boards would be four years ending September 30; an individual could serve only three consecutive terms. These recommendations are to bring uniformity to all city boards. Discussion followed with concern expressed for the potential impact on the Sanford Museum Advisory Board. The board agreed that Chair Stinecipher immediately write the City Commissioners requesting that individuals with a vested interest in Sanford, but not • residing in the city limits, be permitted to serve on the Sanford Museum Advisory Board. 2 • Building Update Commissioner Woodruff reported there was nothing new to report on the building expansion.. Work on phase 1 of the Fort Mellon Park plan has not been scheduled. Lake Carola Ms.Clarke asked about any immediate plans for Lake Carola. She expressed concern about the narrowed bank created by recent trenching. The lessening shoreline has been reported to Public Works. Museum Brochure/Rack Card Ms. Stinecipher said that a brochure for use at the museum remained a priority. Christine Best volunteered to work with the museum staff on the design of the brochure. Ms. Clarke showed an example of a rack card that would provide basic information on the museum. Rack cards would be available at the airport, Welcome Center, Autotrain, etc. Discussion followed about the types of requests made to the museum staff for information. An ongoing problem is students coming with vague instructions for • completion of school projects. Suggestions were made on ways to encourage teachers to inform the museum staff of the nature of the assignments. New Business Turning to new business Chairman Stinecipher announced that a "Government in the Sunshine" training workshop for all the City's Boards and Commissions would be held April 18 at 4:00 pm. The purpose is to provide those serving on Boards and Commission with the requirements of the law. 50 Anniversary Projects The board was reminded that a Sanford Museum symposium was a goal suggested for the fiftieth anniversary year. Ms.Clarke outlined a Sanford history series of PowerPoint/slide show presentations that might be more appropriate and longer lasting. Thanks to the recent acquisition of digital equipment by the Sanford Historical Society, such presentations now are a possibility and could be used multiple times for various audiences. Topics to be developed by experts might include Ft. Mellon (Christine Best), local archaeology (Charlie Carlson), and Henry Sanford's Belgian homes (Bill Kirchoff). Ms. Clarke said the Museum keeps files on Sanford connected celebrities. She asked for input. Names mentioned included: Hardy Rawls, Larry the Cable Guy, Tim Raines, Jeff • Blake, Mike Glad, and Shea Whigham. 3 • Discussion followed on the death of Julia Chase and the historical value of Chase papers. Defibrillator Ms.Clarke said money for an AED (defibrillator) unit for the museum would be requested in next year's budget.
