DECEMBER 9. 1997 Present: Dr. Vann Parker Dr. John Morgan Richard Packard Douglas Stenstrom James Cara Grace Stinecipher Commissioner Lyons Others in Attendance: Alicia Clarke, Curator Eveline Bennett, Secretary Meeting was held at the Sanford Museum and called to order at 5:40pm by Curator, Alicia Clarke, in the absence of Chairman Doris Gormly. The minutes of the last meeting on September 9, 1997 were unanimously approved after Mr. Packard moved and Dr. Parker seconded. The Curator, Ms. Clarke, told board they needed to nominate a new chairman. Mr. • Stenstrom moved Grace Stinecipher be Chairman, Mr. Packard seconded, the board voted unanimously. Old Business: Mirror that fell off wall and the clock are being repaired. New Business: Dr. Parker moved to keep meeting times for 1998 the same, Mr. Stenstrom seconded. The board voted unanimously. Dr. Parker moved that Dr. Morgan be Vice - Chairman, and Mr. Packard seconded. Dr. Morgan accepted with reservations since he will be gone part of the year. Commissioner Lyons described the project to construct a retaining wall for Lake Carola, behind the museum. Mr. Packard moved to request the City Commission to approve the construction of the retaining wall. Dr. Parker seconded and the board approved unanimously. Commissioner Lyons mentioned he was researching the history of the city seal. The seal was established on June 2, 1913. The Board members expressed the view that the longevity of this seal indicated it did not need to be changed. The museum staff wi l l research the histories of the seal of Seminole County, the city flag, and the city motto so that changes to these may be discussed as part of marketing ideas for the city. Ms. Clarke explained that a volunteer is entering all city cemetery records into a computer data base which is being put on the Internet for genealogists. Volunteers are needed to assist with this project. Mr. Cara suggested that all the tombstones be photographed to preserve their inscriptions. • • Ms. Clarke asked for suggestions for programs for 1998. Suggested speakers were Charles Park, Bill Kirchoff,and Sidney Johnston. Mr. Cara mentioned that West Volusia County Historical Society has videotapes of their programs which are available for purchase. Ms. Clarke explained that the main goal for 1998 was marketing the museum. Commissioner Lyons suggested inviting the Greater Seminole County Chamber of Commerce for a social function. Mr. Cara suggested making a walking tour video of the historic area of Sanford. There was a brief discussion with Commissioner Lyons regarding future plans for the Ft. Mellon Park area and possible future museum expansion. Mr. Cara suggested that Ross Wontenay be put on the list of potential board members.
