Members Present: Elizabeth Gallant, George Scott, Doris Gormly,
Dr.Vann Parker
Members Absent: Sylvia Stallworth, Myra Bales, Don Vincent,
Jack Pantelias, Dr. John Morgan
Others Present: Alicia Clarke
Meeting convened at 5:20pm.
There being no business to discuss and a quorum not being
present, the meeting consisted of an informal discussion of
museum and historical society activities.
The Curator updated the board on the Sanford Historical Society's
activities. The Society is working on the 1996 photo calendar.
Mr. Scott suggested that the calendar include a current Sanford
map with the locations of the photos marked on it. A publications
•
committee has been formed to compile and publish a photographic
history of Sanford. It is hoped this will be published in
September 1996.
The Society will hold a zoo memory day in July in honor of the
20th anniversary of the present zoo. The Society will have a
memory day for the 50th anniversary of the end of WWII in August.
The Curator described a very successful oral history session held
recently at the museum. Led by Douglas Stenstrom, this
discussion of baseball history went on for over two hours. The
group included Buddy Lake,Vann Parker, Pete Schirard, and Al &
Whitey McMillan.
The City's anniversary is coming up at the end of September. The
museum is searching for ways to observe this date, particularly
since this is Florida's sesquicentennial year
The museum has agreed to accept the collection of the Seminole
County Sports Hall of Fame. It needs to be transferred from the
Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Parker offered to help with this
project.
The Curator showed the board the Snappin Turtle lawn mower that
had been donated to the museum. Mr. Smith, the inventor of this
mower, also held patents on numerous other inventions. Mr. Scott
. suggested that the museum talk with Mrs. Mann of Lake Monroe
about the history of the Smith family.

The board discussed other local inventors including Dr. Gardner
who invented "Doc's Menhadin Minnow Fishing Lure." Dr. Parker
suggested the museum look into "Dentavision" invented by dentist
Dr.Epps The Student Museum is also seeking information on local
inventors for an American ingenuity room.
The Curator explained that the Student Museum has a new director
and is interested in cooperating with the Sanford Museum on
outreach programs. The Student Museum has also agreed to let
their parking lot be used by visitors touring the historic
district. This will allow the Sanford Museum to develop a
walking tour brochure of the residential district.
A discussion of the ice plant ruins followed.
