Roll Call was taken by Linda Tucker. Minutes of April 29, 1998 were read and approved. Cleanup of Page Jackson Cemetery: All graves have been located, thanks to the Mid Florida Historical Society. One half of the sunken graves have been filled in and the areas have been divided into grids. The • Museum staff is working on mapping the graves and collecting statistics written on the tombstones. An irrigation system will be installed and then the area will be over seeded. This area will be included under the new cemetery maintenance contract. Development of the Crawford Property: The City Commission has authorized the development of this property, and land clearing should start this fall. This will add 2,144 spaces to the cemetery. Cost for development should be between $15,000. - $20,000. Veteran Spaces: There was an error in the newspaper's report on this issue. The City does not provide free spaces for the Veteran's spouse. To determine who qualifies for free veteran spaces staff recommended following the poverty income guidelines used by CDBG and other government agencies. Basically anyone with an income over $10,063. will not qualify, however this issue is still pending approval of the City Commission. It was noted that Bushnell offers free spaces for veterans and their spouses. Discussion on the future of the gazebo and brick building in the cemetery: Howard reported that a building contractor examined these two facilities and determined that both are unsafe. Therefore both facilities have been barricaded off and hazardous signs have been posted. Bob Walter, City Engineer reported that the gazebo is repairable, however considerable repairs must be made with an estimated cost of $30,000. for • renovation and approximately $5,000. for demolition. The second option that Bob Walter presented was to demolish the top of the gazebo and leave only the benches. After . discussion, the Committee recommended to present the second option to the Commission. Bob Walter reported the needed repairs for the red brick building which will cost an estimated $15,000. to repair. After discussion the Committee recommended that the building be demolished and perhaps a landscaped memorial area or restrooms be installed. Old Business: Christopher Neal brought up the issue again on Sec. J and M being cleaned up. He has had numerous complaints about how bad this area looks and would like the City to take action on getting it cleaned up. It was suggested that the owners be notified to clean up their spaces.
