Meeting opened by Jim Jernigan.
Mr. Jernigan took committee members on a tour to the Municipal
Cemetery. Each member was given a map of the cemetery. Map -
was divided into 3 sections- Evergreen, Lakeview and old cemetery
which is fenced off.
Mr. Jernigan gave a presentation on the history of the
cemetery.
The old cemetery that is fenced off is privately owned.
There are no records showing the owners of these lots.
Lakeview section was owned by Judge Miller. The City
purchased the cemetery from him in the late 1930's or early
1940's. Lakeview has the pavillion. Graves date back to people
who were born in the 1800's. This section was probably 2/3 sold
out when City purchased the property. The infant section is in
Lakeview. This section is for newborn infrants and spaces are
sold for $15.00.
Evergreen is the other section and divided into 1st Addn. and
2nd Addn. Evergreen. City is currently selling splices from Sec.
L; 1st Addn. Evergreen. There are unsold spaces in Sec. H, M &
J; 1st. Addn. Evergreen.
The Veterans section is in Evergreen. The City provides
free spaces to veterans in this section only. This area is
almost filled with burials.
"Old Bob" the horse is buried in Evergreen. For many years
Old Bob pulled the caskets to be buried thru the cemetery. When
he died he was buried here and a monument was donated to the City
for him.
There is some vacant adjoining property south of the cemetery
that is for sale by private ownership. The Cemetery Advisory
Commmittee may want to approach the Commission into checking into
purchasing this property for future growth.
Chairman, Bill Welborn suggested reviewing by —laws at next
meeting then discussing objectives of Cemetery Advisory Committee
at future meeting.
