Hodgins Carole Hinshaw Valada Flewellyn Joyce Qualls Alicia Clarke,Curator Absent: Charlie Carlson-excused Joshua Dane Julie Ellenburg, Secretary Mark McCarty,Museum Liaison, Sanford City Commissioner Meeting was called to order at 4:40PM at the Sanford Museum by Chairman Best. The minutes of the October 1,2013 meeting were approved as written. The Chairman introduced new board member Joyce Qualls. The other members of the board introduced themselves. Ms. Clarke told Ms. Qualls about the Sanford Historical Society, Inc. and its role as supporter of the museum. Old Business In regard to a question raised at the October meeting, Ms. Best said she had researched the auditorium and office fire at Crooms Academy and found it was on February 1, 1973 when Crooms had become the 9th Grade Center. Ms. Oliver said she also found a newspaper article about the fire in the collection of the museum in Goldsboro. Ms. Best also found an article in the Sanford Herald about the integration of the Seminole High School in the 1970-71 school year that included a bus schedule. The articles have been copied and placed in the museum research room. In regard to the WFTV report about the death of Harry T. Moore discussed at the October meeting, Ms. Clarke contacted the Orange County Regional History Center about misinformation given to the television station. Their staff said they did not give the information to the WFTV. Ms. Oliver said the book Before His Time says there were documents from the Moore home that were stored at the Seminole County Courthouse. Ms. Oliver has also heard some papers were hidden at the Mosley-Williams Funeral Home. Ms. Clarke suggested checking with the county records office on Lake Mary Blvd. New Business Election of officers: Ms. Best asked for nominations for the board positions of Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Secretary. Ms.Best offered to serve again as Chairman and Carole Hinshaw Sanford Museum Advisory Board 4 .• , • January 7,2014 Page 2 volunteered to serve as Vice Chairman. The members discussed the position of Secretary and suggested the City consider abolishing the position since a City employee is assigned to take care of secretarial duties. Joyce Qualls volunteered to serve as Secretary for 2014. There being further nominations, Christine Kinlaw Best was elected Chairman, Carole Hinshaw was elected Vice Chairman,and Joyce Qualls was elected Secretary. Valada Flewellyn told the board about her new exhibit Praise, Reach, and Teach: The Legacy of Joseph and Wealthy Crooms which will open at the Sanford Museum on February 15. Objects in the exhibit are on loan from the Crooms family and information has been provided by the John C. Riley House in Tallahassee. The papers of Joseph Crooms are in the collection of the Riley museum. The exhibit will be open through May. Ms. Flewellyn is hoping to coordinate with other area museums about telling the Crooms story. The Crooms room at the UCF History Center was discussed. It is only open when Crooms Reunion volunteers are present. Ms. Flewellyn suggested buying Geraldine Thompson's book on Orlando since it has a lot of material about the Crooms family. Ms. Oliver explained the Crooms' children had the papers that were donated to the Riley museum through Pat Whatley. A short discussion followed about the condition of Hopper Academy and difficulties with finding funds for restoration. The board discussed the UCF History Center and their updated Georgetown exhibit. Ms. Clarke asked Ms. Qualls for help working with the Welcome Center. Ms. Qualls volunteers there. She told the board about the organization. The group sponsors Alive after Five and the fourth Friday Art Walk. They also have art exhibits in the Welcome Center. Ms. Clarke will work with Ms.Qualls to refresh the history display at the Welcome Center. She will also find out about providing a rack for the City brochures and postcard size ads for the Sanford Museum and the Sanford Historical Society.A discussion followed about special events. Ms. Oliver updated the board on events and projects at the Goldsboro Welcome Center and Museum. The group sponsored successful Christmas and back-to-school events to benefit students. The back-to-school event emphasizes giving personal hygiene items to the students. The calendar was set for 2014. The meetings for the year will be April 1, July 1,October 7, 2014 and January 6,2015.
