McKibbin, Jr.- Chairman Robert E. Karns Arthur Harris A. W. Lee, Jr. Mason H. Wharton City Manager W. E. Knowles Building Official Linvel Risner Absent: Members: Donald Bishop William Bush S. Joe Davis Dr. Brooke Smith The meeting was called to order by Chairman McKibbin. The reading of the minutes of the previous meeting was waived. The first item of business was consideration regarding the request of the commercial establishment of the Burger Chef, located at Sarita Street and French Avenue, for a sign variance whereby it was non - (complying with Article 28, Sign Regulations, Paragraph C. Subparagraph 2, of the Zoning Ordinance which allows the maximum for a double faced sign to be 100 square feet. Mr. Frank Island, prime contractor, appeared and stated that the sign had been ordered and was being shipped from Joliet, Illinois, and it was due in the following day. He further explained that at the time the sign was ordered, Mr. Sid Vihlen of Randall Electric Company, Sanford, did the electrical work, was requested to talk with the Building Official and had talked with the Building Official outlining the size from a proposed sketch, which was not to scale, and at that time it was felt by the Building Official that if the sign did not exceed the maximum square feet there would be no problem. However, upon actual submission of the sign sketched to actual scale and which was not submitted until December 14, 1965, it was found to be approximately 160 square feet in size. A & P Minutes 12/16/65 2 Upon being questioned, Mr. Island stated that this is the company's, the Burger Chef, preferred standard sign but that if so required, they probably could have reduced the size of the sign. Mr. Island and Mr. Vihlen appeared unaware of the 100 square foot sign requirement as set forth in the ordinance and were assuming that Mr. Risner had definitely approved of the sketch as discussed over the telephone. After a lengthy discussion, on the basis that there could have been a misunderstanding over the presentation of the size of the sign between the three parties, Mr. Wharton moved that the sign variance be approved and granted for a permit; further pointing out that with the sign being shipped and received the following day it would work a hardship on the company cost -wise. Motion was seconded by Mr. Rams and carried. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned. Chairman Secretary
