Ms. Clarke explained how museum fits into the Recreation Department and the differences between Recreation and the Parks division of the Public Works Department. Ms. Hinshaw updated the board about the Sanford Historical Society and its projects including the upcoming holiday wreath sale. Ms. Best announced the availability of the online version of The Sanford Herald. She said the online site is not easily searchable. Only a small portion of the images have been reviewed with Page 1 of 2 OCR. The board discussed the Sanford Herald digitization project and the poor quality of some of the images. Ms. Clarke explained that the Sanford Museum and the Museum of Seminole County History have the only copies of the Herald on microfilm. Apparently only two copies of the microfilm ever existed. The county museum has the original newspapers. Ms. Clarke said the Herald still holds the copyright on all of this material. Ms. Clarke updated the board on the status of the Public History Center/Student Museum. The building was sold by the school board to Lisa Lessard. It is being restored and will be open in March 2017 as something like an event center. Ms. Lessard gave the Sanford Museum staff the opportunity to look through and take some items that had been left in the building. Commissioner Woodruff announced that work had begun again on the restoration of Hopper Academy. The project needs $15,000. The a/c is being redone and the foundation has been replaced. He passed around a flier explaining structural changes that are needed. Discussion followed about the history of the school and the funds needed for the restoration. It was suggested that the Sanford Historical Society promote this project in their newsletter and possibly donate some money. The museum staff will put together all of the historical material about Hopper in the museum's collection.* Ms. Clarke told the board the museum has received the archives of First Baptist Church. The congregation turned their buildings over to Central Baptist Church and will be looking for a new home. The museum received 24 cubic feet of material from the church. The museum did not receive any records from First Presbyterian Church when it closed. Commissioner Woodruff said there should have been records at the church. Ms. Clarke will check with the Orlando Presbytery. Ms. Clarke talked about the challenges of large donations like this. The museum's archives now houses large collections from the Sanford Womans Club, the Sanford Police Department, and The Sanford Herald. Ms. Clarke said the museum needs a plan for going forward with these types of collections. This may involve keeping digital images instead of original items. Options for storage need to be considered. Discussion followed. Ms. Best mentioned that the museum now has Wi-Fi. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at: 6:25pm.
