The meeting was called to order at 5:03 Pm by Chairman Pasha Baker.
The minutes from January 9, 2018 were reviewed and approved as written.
Old business:
Commissioner Woodruff reported he brought the idea of moving the shuffleboard clubhouse to
City staff and learned that the space is used frequently. Commissioner Woodruff has requested
a calendar to show use of the space. An option of adding a bathroom could be considered and
would enhance the meeting space. If available, the next Museum Advisory Board Meeting will
be held at the shuffleboard clubhouse.
The board members were reminded that they must complete an Ethics and Sunshine Law class
annually. A class is being offered on April 18, 1-5pm. The class may also be completed online.
New business:
Ms. Clarke said the Sallie Harrison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)
will be celebrating their 100th birthday in November. This local chapter was instrumental in
pushing for the original museum building. Ms. Clarke would like a City proclamation honoring
this chapter and would like to have it read at a Commission meeting in November. Commissioner
Woodruff said there is now a form for requesting a proclamation.
Ms. Clarke mentioned the NAS Sanford 50th Reunion of all squadrons from 1942-1969 is to be
held at the Fleet Reserve, 3040 West SR 46 on June 211t through June 24th. She thinks this is the
last reunion that will be held. She said Museum Assistant Brigitte Stephenson is working on plans
to record the verterans' stories. The board discussed ways to interview attendees. Some ideas
were: bring in a bus or conversion van to hold interviews, check into any opportunities with UCF
or videographers with Seminole State College. Ms. Baker suggested creating audio in house at
the Museum and using Facebook live. She said she also uses the Library of Congress' Story Corps
app on her phone to capture interviews.
Ms. Clarke announced Patty Williams had resigned from the board due to health issues.
Ms. Clarke asked for advice on connecting with students needing Bright Futures credits. A group
discussion took place about connecting with students who need community service hours and
the procedures to work with the school system. Commissioner Woodruff said Ms. Clarke needed
to look into the E Pathway program. Ms. Baker talked about the spring 2018 internship expo at
Noah's Event Center, Lake Mary on April 12, 2018. Many internships offer stipends or salaries.
Ms. Clarke said she would look into this.
Ms. Clarke is looking for groups of students who are interested in doing projects, perhaps a club
or art club. Ms. Baker said she has made contact with teachers at the Teach In event. The group
discussed the possibility of museum field trips and addressed the issue of limited space. Ms.
Sprysenski, a teacher, explained that one class may go on a field trip rather than an entire grade
as was the case at the Student Museum. Field trips are limited by the cost of bus transportation.
Another idea mentioned was the possibility of museum staff visiting classrooms.
The Board talked about using the library for meetings or partnering with a private entity such as
Serenity Towers to hold meetings. Ms. Hinshaw announced Eddie Browder will be giving a
presentation on "Vanishing Sanford" at Serenity Towers at the next Sanford Historical Society
meeting on May 24th, 2018. The staff will learn more about the meeting facilities at that time.
The meeting adjourned at 6:10 pm.
