The meeting was called to order at 5:10pm by Chairman Joshua Dane.
The minutes of the October 6, 2015 meeting were approved as read.
New member, Patty Williams, was introduced. All members of the Board introduced
themselves and welcomed the new member.
Old Business:
The board reviewed the requirement of attending a Sunshine and Ethics class. The new
members asked when it would be offered. Ms. Best asked if it was an annual requirement. Ms.
Hinshaw said the class is available online. Mr. Dane said he took the class in Winter Park. Ms.
Clarke said she would check on the requirement and the class availability.
Ms. Clarke announced that Sobik the elephant, who was the first elephant at the old Sanford
Zoo and was transferred to the new Central Florida Zoo when it opened in 1975, had passed
away. Sobik had been renamed Tusko and had been living at the Oregon Zoo. The Oregon Zoo
had contacted the Sanford Museum as they were planning a big birthday party for Sobik/Tusko.
The museum staff was working with them to provide photos and a history of Sobik's time in
Sanford. Jack Hanna, as director for the Sanford Zoo, purchased Sobik and Jack Sobik provided
the funds. Sobik/Tusko had to be euthanized in December due to complications from an old leg
injury.

Carole Hinshaw gave a report on the Sanford Historical Society's Holiday Fundraiser that was
held in December at the Sanford Museum. She explained that it was the idea of Society Board
member Kathy Butler Skyles. Items for the fundraiser, including table -top trees, wreaths &
holiday arrangements, were donated by Society members and local residents and businesses.
The event was very successful and raised approximately $1500.00 dollars to be used by the
Society for the Sanford Museum. This was the first event of its kind held at the museum. This
will also give the museum its first annual event to promote and place on community calendars.
The NextDoor social media site was discussed as a place to promote museum events like the
holiday event. It was noted that the City of Sanford is now on NextDoor so the museum should
be able to easily place information there.
Ms. Clarke updated the board on the status of the UCF Public History Center (formerly the
Student Museum). The School Board has put out a request for bids in order to sell the building.
It was decided to halt the dispersal of the collection until these bids are received. The school
archives was transferred to UCF Special Collections for safekeeping. The staff of the Sanford
Museum has heard nothing about the items they requested. The bids for the building will be
opened in March.
Ms. Hinshaw gave an update on The Sanford Herald digitization project. The image review
process is complete and the scans have been sent to UCF for the metadata phase. There is no
date slated for completion of this project.
New Business:
Ms. Clarke announced that Kim Nelson, Coordinator of the Museum of Seminole County
History, retired at the end of 2015. They will be hiring someone quickly but the museum will
remain open in the interim. The museum has only this one part time position.
Christine Kinlaw-Best announced the death, on August 30, 2015, of long time Museum Advisory
Board member, Charlie Carlson. His dedication to the Advisory Board for many years was
recognized by the Board.
Ms. Williams requested copies of the by-laws of the board and the ordinance that established
the board. The other board members said they would also like copies. Ms. Clarke said she
would send these out.
Ms. Williams asked how the City finds board members. Ms. Clarke said the City runs the
Citizens Academy program to encourage citizen participation. She acknowledged that it is
difficult to find new board members.

Election of Officers: The officers from 2015 all agreed to serve again in the same positions for
2016 — Joshua Dane, Chairman; Carole Hinshaw, Vice Chairman and Joyce Qualls, Secretary. All
Board members were in favor.
The meeting dates and times for the upcoming year of the Advisory Board were discussed and
set. The schedule will be:
April 5, 2016 — 5pm
July 5, 2016 — 5pm
October 4, 2016 — 5pm
January 3, 2017 — Spm
Ms. Clarke said the Sanford Historical Society has the opportunity to use the Shuffleboard Club
building which is owned by the City of Sanford. The building has a meeting room with a small
kitchen. This meeting space would allow museum staff and volunteers to host workshops and
programs. The staff would like suggestions for topics for workshops. Ms. Best said Jeannine
Taylor's gallery on First Street offers lectures to small groups. Ms. Clarke will contact her about
ideas. Ms. Hinshaw mentioned that demonstrating handcrafts like bobbin lace can fascinate
people. Ms. Best suggested contacting Blues musician Maurice Fields about a program. Her
family's store in Goldsboro was on the "Chitlin' Circuit." Ms. Clarke would like to have
programs related to local history and to keep the cost for these programs below $10. Ms. Best
said some program series offer discounts on the Sanford 365 website. She suggested any craft
sessions should be "make and take." Ms. Clarke said she would also like the museum to have
some programs at Serenity Towers to bring some of the residents across the street to the
museum.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at: 6:25pm.
