The condition described by phone, hand crimped deck is the
same as the deck tested in Miami about 5 years ago.
The deck tests for uplift were run using only a handmade
crimp at the hidden connector. The test results showed that
the crimp would provide a connection which exceeded the
limits of the test equipment. Tests were run at about 40 psf,
which is the minimum acceptable per the South Florida Building
Code.
The single crimp at the connector is not sufficient to develop
the deck shear. A minimum of two crimps between purlins is
necessary to develop shear diaphram action.
If a more detailed study is necessary, please advise me.
Sincerely,
WILLIAM M. BALDWIN, P.E.
