Dear Mr. Smith,
Per your request, I have studied the drawings for the flaming and platforms for the
proposed skate park facility that you have provided for me. The purpose of this study is
to determine the adequacy and safety of these structures when used in a recreational
environment.
The drawings were prepared by Skatespots, of Hauppauge, NY. There are no standards
for these structures, so I did stress and deflection calculations for these proposed
structures. These were done for a "worst case" scenario because of the importance of
safety. Therefore the computations performed have been of a very conservative nature.
For example, I recommend the use of selected lumber for the structural members,
confirmation of the use of adequate fasteners, and the assumption of heavy persons using
the facility. I understand the fabricator is Z,arahemla Construction Company. Since this
facility has not yet been built, it is recommended that a qualified person supervise the
construction and certify the proper fabrication.

The main struc -' "in the design is 2x6 lumber, spaced 8_part on the
ramp areas, d 12 aratheplatforms. Assuming a large "teenager" of 250 pounds
and an impact a r of 2.0, that would be a maximum load of 500 pounds as a worst
case. Assuming a pure simply supported beam (no end constraints) and neglecting the
strengthening effects of the plywood and adjacent 2x6 members, the maximum bending
stress at mid -span on a single 2x6 is 1587 pounds/sq. inch, considerably under the design
value for selected Douglas fir or other gelected gnich1ral lnmher Away from mid -span,
the stress would be lower. The use of four 3" (10 penny) nails at each end of the 2x6
members as specified is adequate. An option of using the equivalent strength wood
screws is suggested to reduce the possibility of loosening. All nails/screws must be

Using the same ultra -conservative criteria as above, the calculated deflection of an 8 footlong2x6underthehypothetical500poundimpactloadis0.433 inch, which is
acceptable. Obviously, the actual deflection would be much less due to the stiffeningeffectsoftheplywoodandadjacent2x6members.
Because there is space for only one skateboarder on an 8' section at any one time, there isnoneedtodoubletheloadsconsidered (no need to calculate the loads for two
skateboarders).

as i am sure you have noticed, the site hasn't been updated in quite some time and I'm sure you are wondering
why. well, let me break it down for you all... skatespots.com is run by 2 brothers. both work on the site in their
spare time just because it's something they enjoy doing. the past few months have been very very busy for them,
one brother is getting married in the beginning of january and planning a wedding takes lots of time and effort.
add a full time job into the equation and you're left with no spare time for updates. the other brother is head of
SKATESPOTS CONSTRUCTION and he has also been very busy the past couple of months. this most recent update,
the moorestown skatepark, is one of the main reasons. traveling, building, and managing a business takes lots of
time and effort which leaves him with... you guessed it, no free time for updates. we know we've been slacking but
we're working on it. more updates are coming so stay tuned!

you're probably wondering what happened with this contest. well... nothing. i got about one submission that was
even worth putting up on the site. so here's the deal ... the contest is still open for submissions (your welcome) and
if anyone actually sends in something good ... they get the deck. it's that simple. if anyone wins the deck, i'II let
you all know.
we still have one deck from ENDUSTRIAL skateboards to give away. _lick here to see as photo of theitem up for
the rules are as follows:
the entry does not have to contain a finished panoramic photo of the park/
skatespot. submitting multiple photographs that need to be stitched together will be
accepted. we'll do all the work... fine...
the entry must also contain all pertinent info about the spot. that means: pads or
not, hours, fees, directions, website, etc...
entry does not have to be of a skatepark. street spots will also be accepted, but they
have to be of big, kick ass spots! submitting your local ledge that has a decent handrail
will not win you the deck. but street spots (like E PAR;: R.I.P.) that have multiple
ledges, rails, drop-offs that would make interesting panoramic photos would be a good
way to go.

i picked this tidbit up from the there is an article about a park which is to be built in
queens in the spring of 2003. read the whole story but here's a quick quote from the article:
Queens is the last borough to get a Parks Department skateboarding facility —
but one is coming to Rockaway soon, according to Councilman Joseph
Addabbo Jr. of Ozone Park. He recently toured the proposed site on Parks
property at Beach 91st Street and the boardwalk.
Construction will begin next spring. We have $600,000 allocated for the
park," said Addabbo, who is chairman of the City Council Parks and Recreation
Committee.
