Classroom Building No. 400
Revisions to Approved Drawings
Dear Mr. Fioretti
This letter is to address and clarify three fire code items forthe above referenced project.
The first item is,the.seco.nd.floor,corridor.ceiling ystem The original design submitted and
approved indicated the. one hour rated corridor concrete; block partitions going to the
underside of the roof deck The structural engineer and the general contractor did not
interpret the drawings, per. architect's design intent. The, metal stud truss roof framing
system was priced out as bearing on top of the corridor block partitions. I resubmitted
revised drawings indicating a -one hour US -Gypsum Co. Shaft liner ceiling system, shown
on sheet A15. This system has been 1durid to be a very costly solution. I contacted US
Gypsum. Association regarding .our corridor situation, and they have recommended using
a tested one hour ceiling composed of 2 layers of 5/8" type 'x' gypsum board secured to
the underside of the truss system. The design they recommended is listed in the Gypsum
Manuel as RC 2601-1 HR.. Although the RC2601-1 HR. is indicated with wood truss
members, the US Gypsum Association technical representative said that it would apply to
metal truss systems also. I would like to resubmit the building section on sheet Al 5 with
the RC 2601-1 HR. design for your approval.
The second item is the glass block on the.exterior walls of the stair wells. After review of
the 1994 Standard Building Code and discussion with the building department, the stairs
are considered as exterior stairways under Section 1006.2: The exterior walls of these
stairs are not required., therefore,.the glass block does not have to be rated. Also in Section
1006.2.4 under exception two, the protection is% not required in two story buildings where
there is a second exit remotely located.{.as required':;in; section 1006.2.2. The general
contractor, is scheduling to use inon7rated. glass block on the exterior wall which was
indicated. and approved on. our original submittal.

The third item for review is the corridor windows at the first floor reception room at corridor
102. Per Table 700 in the 1994 Standard Building Code; `opening protective in exit access
corridors are._to_be.rated at 20.minutes. L.have sent to the -general contractor for pricing aspecfromTechnicalGlassProductsforFIRELITE - 20 minute rating. This glazing material
is wireless, and has. been tested with .a:.UL File No. R13377, with a maximum size of
36"x95". Our design is for wo.36"x 50" panels in a 20 minute rated hollow metal window
frame. Per NFPA 80 Section 13-3.1.2 Maximum Size Openings, Multiple window, other
than casement, can be up to 7'-0" by 10'-011
I will revise our current drawings to reflect these changes, and resubmit for your approval.
Please give me a call after your review of this letter.
