Is 28-1. Example of Combination Swinging and Sliding Doors Allowed by` Exception No. 3 to 28-2.2.
Capacity of Means of Egress.
The capacity of means of egress shall be in accordance with Section 5 3
In special purpose industrial occupancies, means of egress shall be provided a
the persons actually employed; spaces not subject to human occupancy because of thFmachineryorequipmentmaybeexcludedfromconsideration.
rkExceptionto28-2.3.1 places practical limits on the number
uled exits and on the arrangement of the means of egress in a special..: 4
se industrial occupancy. There is no life safety purpose served by
Lling exits from the center of a large machine or equipmentionwheretherearenooccupantsundernormaloperatingtons. A number of industries provide weather shelter for ,large'
ses and equipment. Typical examples include steel rolling mills,
extruders, and metalworking machines, . all of which occupy a ; 'f,
sty of the floor space in the sheltered building. In many of the more
Iucated operations, full process control is conducted from"I", ss
ly located control room. Personnel are normally in the buildinI

To provide exits from such special purpose industrial occupancies ---,-

large areas normally enclosed by special purpose structures would'#
an excessive number of units of 'exit width if the occupant load q
alculated on the basis of 100 sq ft (9.3 sq m) per person. Ifsionsforthecapacityofthemeansofegressinaspecialpurpose;

For rooms or areas with a total aPacity of le.ri than 25 persons having a direct exittothestreetortoapeast., e building at ground level, with a total travel distancefromanyointofnotover50ft (15 m), Jingle exit maybe permitted. Such travel shallbeonthesameorethe—Iraverlrng of stairs is required, there shall be a verticaltravelofnomorethan15ft (4.5 m J and such stairs shall be provided with complete renclosures
to separate them from any other part of the building, with no door openings therein. ThisExceptionshallnotapplytohighhazardindustrialoccupancies. The
intent of the Exception to 28-2.4.1 is to allow the construction of small
meeting or conference facilities or an office area in an industrial occupancy,
as shown in Figure 28-2. It is common practice to provide smallareasforshiftsafetymeetings, production scheduling, coffee breaks, etc. Occupants are normally limited in number and are quite familiar with theindustrialoccupancy's layout and construction. The appropriate occupant
load factor [for example 100 sq ft (9.3 sq m) per person] is used todetermineifthespacewillhaveacapacityoffewerthan .25 people. Sincethenumberofoccupantsislimitedto25, these areas represent a minimum
risk to life safety, as contrasted with a place of assembly where largergroupsofpeopleareanticipated. Occupant
