Our study herein addressed the geotechnical design aspects for the proposed project. Project Approach The objective of our foundation soils study for the proposed project was to obtain information concerning the subsurface conditions within the foundation limits in order to make geotechnical engineering estimates and recommendations in each of the following areas: Foundation Soils Study Proposed Sprint Tower Site Sanford, Florida Page 3 1. Soil stratigraphy at the boring location and the development of the approximate soil profile within the depth of foundation influence at the proposed tower location. 2. Design parameters required for the foundation system recommended for the tower based on the Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) blow counts obtained in the boring, including allowable bearing pressure, soil strength and friction parameters for the recommended foundation. 3. General location and description of potentially deleterious materials which may interfere with construction progress or foundation performance, including buried or surficial existing fills, organics, construction debris, etc. 4. Identification of some critical design or construction details, including present groundwater levels, estimated wet season levels, and seasonal fluctuations in the tower location. Scope of Work In order to address the above objectives, our scope of work for this project included the following: 1. Reviewed available published information on the site, including the United States Department of Agriculture USDA) Soil Conservation Service (SCS) soil survey data for Osceola County and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) topographic maps. Conducted a subsurface exploration program which consisted of conducting one (1) SPT boring to a depth of 35 feet at the proposed tower location. Our testing included the collection of representative soil samples and recording the SPT blow counts during the drilling of the boring. 3. Reviewed and visually classified the recovered soils in the laboratory using the Unified Soils Classification System. Developed the general soil stratigraphy at the proposed tower location. 4. Performed geotechnical engineering studies and analyses in order to develop geotechnical engineering and foundation recommendations for each of the above four (4) objectives previously discussed for the proposed project. 5. Prepared a formal foundation soils engineering report which summarizes the course of our study, the field and laboratory data generated, the subsurface conditions encountered, and our geotechnical engineering and foundation parameters for the proposed tower. Field Exploration Program For our study, we conducted one (1) Standard Penetration Test (SPT) boring to a depth of 35 feet at the proposed tower location. The SPT boring was performed at the location marked by the surveyor. This location is shown in Plate 3. The SPT boring procedure was conducted using hollow -stem auger drilling techniques in general conformance with ASTM D-1586. Soil sampling using a 1-3/8 inch I.D. split -spoon sampler was conducted continuously in the upper 10 Foundation Soils Study Proposed Sprint Tower Site Sanford, Florida Page 5 feet and on 5-foot intervals thereafter. The number of successive blows required to drive the sampler into the soil constitutes the test result commonly referred to as the "N"-value. The "N"-value has been empirically correlated with various soil properties and is considered to be indicative of the relative density of less cohesive soils and the consistency of cohesive soils. The recovered split spoon samples were visually classified in the field, and representative samples were placed in jars and transported to our office for further review and confirmation of the field classification.. Generalized Soil Stratiaraphy The results of the subsurface exploration program including the soil stratification profiles and some pertinent exploration information such as SPT "N"-values and groundwater levels are graphically presented on Plate 4. A legend describing the different soil types encountered is included on Plate 5. Soil stratification was based on the review of recovered soil samples and interpretation of the field boring log by a geotechnical engineer. The stratification lines represent the approximate boundaries between soil types; the actual transition may be gradual. The soil strata were visually classified using the Unified Soils Classification System. Minor variations in soil types not considered important to our engineering evaluations may have been abbreviated or omitted for clarity. In general, the boring encountered light brown fine sands to slightly silty fine sands (Strata 1,2,4 & 5) to a depth of about 32 feet. A layer of highly organic muck (Stratum 3) approximately 2 feet thick was encountered in the boring at a depth of about 4 feet. Below the upper sandy materials, the boring encountered gray sandy to silty clay (Stratum 6) throughout the remainder of the Foundation Soils Study Proposed Sprint Tower Site Sanford, Florida Page 6 boring. Based on SPT "N"-values taken from our SPT boring, the upper fine sands extending to a depth of approximately 8 feet are generally considered to be loose to medium dense materials. Below this the soils are generally considered to be medium dense to dense materials. Shallow Water Table Conditions The shallow groundwater level measured in our boring performed for this study is included on the attached soil boring profile on Plate 4. The shallow groundwater level was encountered at a level of 9.5 feet below existing site grades in the boring conducted for our study. The shallow groundwater level in this area should be expected to vary during wet seasons and heavy rainfall events. Based on the discovered soil stratigraphy, the measured groundwater conditions, and a review of USDA Soil Survey information, we estimate that the normal wet season high groundwater level over the site will be approximately 2.5 feet below existing grade. Foundation Design Parameters It is our understanding that the tower will be placed on a deep foundation system consisting of a drilled shaft or pier. The following are the soil strength parameters for the soils encountered beneath the tower location. Average effective angle of internal soil friction (phi) was estimated to be 290, based on boring results for the upper 8 feet of fine sands. Below this the average phi angle is approximately 310. The soil to pier friction angle (delta) was estimated to be .58. The total unit weight gamma) for the sands encountered from 0 to 8 feet was estimated to be 95 pcf. The total unit weight for the sands encountered below this depth was estimated to be 115 pcf. The unconfined compressive Foundation Soils Study Proposed Sprint Tower Site Sanford, Florida Page 7 strength for the clayey materials encountered in the lower portion of the boring was determined to be 1.0 tsf. Due to the soils and water table encountered in the boring, it will be necessary to case the shaft excavation to avoid caving of the soils in addition to de -watering or using a slurry method to keep water out of the excavation. Based on our understanding of the proposed construction, a concrete pad will be placed adjacent to the tower for equipment purposes. Based on the SPT "N" values obtained from the soil boring, a net allowable soil bearing pressure of 1700 psf (in excess of overburden) is estimated for the existing shallow soils found over the site.
