It uses either a two-piece Style 10 (1/2 inch NPT) or Style 40 (3/4 inch NPT) Recessed Es- cutcheon with 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of recessed adjustment or up to 3/4 inch 19,1 mm) of total adjustment from the flush pendent position, or a two-piece Style 20 (1/2 inch NPT) or Style 30 (3/4 inch NPT) Recessed Escutcheon with 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjust- ment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of total adjustment from the flush pen- dent position. The adjustment provided by the Recessed Escutcheon reduces the accuracy to which the fixed pipe drops to the sprinklers must be cut. Corrosion resistant coatings, where applicable, are utilized to extend the life of copper alloy sprinklers beyond that which would otherwise be ob- tained when exposed to corrosive at - IMPORTANT Always refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP700 for the "INSTALLER WARNING" that provides cautions with respect to handling and instal- lation of sprinkler systems and com- ponents. Improper handling and in- stallation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its compo- nents and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely. Page 1 of 8 mospheres. Although corrosion resis- tant coated sprinklers have passed the standard corrosion tests of the appli- cable approval agencies., the testing is not representative of all possible cor- rosive atmospheres. Consequently, it is recommended that the end user be consulted with respect to the suitability of these coatings for any given corro- sive environment. The effects of ambi- ent temperature, concentration of chemicals, and gas/chemical velocity, should be considered, as a minimum, along with the corrosive nature of the chemical to which the sprinklers will be exposed. An intermediate level versions of the Series TY-FRB Pendent Sprinklers are detailed in Technical Data Sheet TFP356, and Sprinkler Guards are de- tailed in Technical Data Sheet TFP780 WARNINGS The Series TY-FRB :sprinklers de- scribed herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the applica- ble standards of the National Fire Pro- tection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authorities hav- ing jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these de- vices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. Sprinklers that are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated or otherwise altered after leaving the factory. Modi- fied sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be replaced if they cannot be completely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid dam- age to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers dam- aged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be re- placed. Also, replace any sprinkler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb. (Ref. Installation Section). Frequent visual inspections are rec- ommended to be initially performed for corrosion resistant coated sprinklers, after the installation has been com- pleted, to verify the integrity of the cor- rosion resistant coating. Thereafter, annual inspections per NFPA 25 should suffice; however, instead of in- specting from the floor level, a random sampling of close-up visual inspec- tions should be made, so as to better determine the exact sprinkler condi- TFP171 2.7/8' DIA. 5/8t1/4' ( 73,0 mm) 3/4' 19,1 mm) 15,9t6,4 mm) -1' DIA. 1/4' (6,4 mm) 2/4 FACE OF (57,2 mm) MOUNTING SPRINKLER PLATE FITTING 1/8' 3,2 mm) T MOUNTING SURFACE CLOSURE SERIES 1-1/4' 31,8 mm) TY-FRB 3/4' (19,1 mm) FIGURE 9 SERIES TY-FRB RECESSED PENDENT WITH TWO-PIECE 3/4 INCH TOTAL ADJUSTMENT STYLE 10 RECESSED ESCUTCHEON 5.6 K-FACTOR, 1/2 INCH NPT 2-7/8' DIA. 5/8t1/4' ( 73,0 mm) 3/4' (19,1 mm) 15,9t6,4 mm) 2-1/4' DIA. 1/4' (6,4 mm) FACE OF ( 57,2 mm) MOUNTING SPRINKLER PLATE FITTING 8' 3,21/mm) MOUNTING SURFACE CLOSURE SERIES 1.5/16' (33,3 mm) TY-FRB 13/16' (20,6 mm) FIGURE 11 SERIES TY-FRB RECESSED PENDENT WITH TWO-PIECE 3/4 INCH TOTAL ADJUSTMENT STYLE 40 RECESSED ESCUTCHEON 8.0 K-FACTOR, 3/4 INCH NPT tion and the long term integrity of the corrosion resistant coating, as it may be affected by the corrosive conditions present. It is the best choice for archi- tecturally sensitive areas such as hotel lobbies, office buildings, churches, and restaurants. Each unit includes a Cover Plate As- sembly that conceals the sprinkler op- erating components above the ceiling. The separable two-piece design of the Cover Plate and Support Cup Assem- blies allows installation of the sprin- klers and pressure testing of the fire protection system prior to installation of a suspended ceiling or application of the finish coating to a fixed ceiling. They also permit removal of sus- pended ceiling panels for access to building service equipment without having to first shut down the fire pro- tection system and remove sprinklers. Also, the separable two-piece design of the the Sprinkler provides for 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of vertical adjustment, to reduce the accuracy to which the length of fixed pipe drops to the sprin- klers must be cut. The Series RFII Sprinklers are shipped with a Disposable Protective IMPORTANT Always refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP700 for the "INSTALLER WARNING" that provides cautions with respect to handling and instal- lation of sprinkler systems and com- ponents. Improper handling and in- stallation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its compo- nents and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely. Page 1 of 4 Cap. The Protective Cap is temporarily removed for installation, and then it can be replaced to help protect the sprinkler while the ceiling is being in- stalled or finished. The tip of the Pro- tective Cap can also be used to mark the center of the ceiling hole into plas- ter board, ceiling tiles, etc. by gently pushing the ceiling product against the Protective Cap. When the ceiling in- stallation is complete the Protective Cap is removed and the Cover Plate Assembly installed. As an option, the Series RFII Standard Response (5 mm bulb) "Royal Flush II" Concealed Pendent Sprinklers may be fitted with a silicone Air and Dust Seal Ref. Fig. 5). The Air and Dust Seal is intended for sensitive areas where it is desirable to stop air and dust travel through the cover plate from the area above the ceiling. WARNINGS The Series RFII Concealed Pendent Sprinklers described herein must be installed and maintained in compli- ance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the per- formance of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. At this point the Deflector sup- ported by the Guide Pins drops down to its operational position. The glass Bulb contains a fluid that expands when exposed to heat. When the rated temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass Bulb, activating the sprinkler and allowing water to flow. With the sprinkler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1116 inch 1,6 mm) for the 155°F/68°C and 3/32 inch (2,4 mm) for the 200°F/93°C tem- perature ratings. A leak tight 112 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained with a torque of 7 to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A maxi- mum of 21 ft.lbs. (28,5 Nm) of torque is to be used to install sprinklers. Higher levels of torque may distort the sprinkler inlet with consequent leak- age or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to compensate for in- sufficient adjustment in the Sprinkler Assembly by under- or over -tightening the Sprinkler/Support Cup Assembly. Readjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. Step 1. The sprinkler must only be installed in the pendent position and with the centerline of the sprinkler per- pendicular to the mounting surface. Step 2. Remove the Protective Cap. Step 3. With pipe thread sealant ap- plied to the pipe threads, hand tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Step 4. Wrench tighten the sprinkler using only the RFII Sprinkler Wrench Ref. Figure 3). The RFII Sprinkler Wrench is to be applied to the Sprin- kler as shown in Figure 3. Step 5. Replace the Protective Cap Ref. Figure 4) by pushing it upwards until it bottoms out against the Support Cup. The Protective Cap helps prevent damage to the Deflector and Arms dur- ing ceiling installation and/or during application of the finish coating of the ceiling. It may also be used to locate the center of the clearance hole by gently pushing the ceiling material up against the center point of the Protec- tive Cap. NOTE As long as the Protective Cap remains in place, the system is considered to be "Out of Service". If the Sprinkler has been damaged and the Deflector does not move up and down freely, replace the entire Sprin- kler assembly. Do not attempt to mod- ify or repair a damaged sprinkler. Step 7. When installing an Air and Dust Seal, refer to Figure 5, otherwise proceed to Step 8. To attach the Air and Dust Seal, verify the angle of the out- side edge of the seal is oriented ac- cording to Figure 5. Start the edge of the Retainer in the grooved slot of the Air and Dust Seal and continue around the retainer until the entire Air and Dust Seal is engaged. NOTE The Air and Dust Seal is only to be installed on the periphery of the Re- tainer. Step 8. Screw on the Cover Plate/Re- tainer Assembly until the Retainer - Figure 2 (or Air and Dust Seal - Figure 5) contacts with the ceiling. Do not continue to screw on the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly such that it lifts a ceiling panel out of its normal position. If the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly cannot be engaged with the Support Cup or the Cover Plate/Re- tainer Assembly cannot be engaged sufficiently to contact the ceiling, the Sprinkler Fitting must be repositioned. Care and Maintenance The Series RFII must be maintained and serviced in accordance with the following instructions: NOTES Absence of the Cover Plate Assembly may delay sprinkler operation in a fire situation. Page 4 of 4 When properly installed, there is a nominal 3132 inch (2,4 mm) air gap between the lip of the Cover Plate and the ceiling, as shown in Figure 2. This air gap is necessary for proper opera- tion of the sprinkler. If the ceiling is to be repainted after the installation of the Sprinkler, care must be exercised to ensure that the new paint does NOT seal off any of the air gap. Factory painted Cover Plates MUST NOT be repainted. They should be re- placed, if necessary, by factory painted units. Do not pull the Cover Plate relative to the Enclosure. Separation may result. Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that it controls, permission to shut down the affected fire protection system must be obtained from the proper authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this action must be notified. If a sprinkler must be removed, do not reinstall it or a replacement without reinstalling the Cover Plate Assembly. If a Cover Plate Assembly becomes dislodged during service, replace it im- mediately. The owner is responsible for the in- spection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and de- vices in compliance with this docu- ment, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protec- tion Association (e.g., NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. ZI NFPA 13 Code Language and Seismic Qualification NFPA 13 Standard for Installation of Sprinkler Systems 2007 Edition 9.2.1.3.3* Flexible Sprinkler Hose Fittings. A. 9.2.1.3.3 Examples of areas of use include clean rooms, suspended ceilings, and exhaust ducts. 9.2.1.3.3.1 Listed flexible sprinkler hose fittings and its anchoring components, intended for use in installations connecting the sprinkler piping to sprinklers, shall be installed in accordance with the requirements of the Listing including any installation instructions. 9.2.1.3.3.2 When installed and supported by suspended ceilings, the ceiling shall meet ASTM C-635and shall be installed in accordance with ASTM C-636. 9.2.1.3.3.3* When flexible sprinkler hose fittings exceed 6 ft in length and are supported by a suspended ceiling a hanger(s) attached to the structure shall be required to ensure that the maximum unsupported length does not exceed 6 ft. A. 9.2.1.3.3.3 The committee evaluation of flexible sprinkler hose fittings supported by suspended ceilings was based upon a comparison of the weight of a 6 ft, 1 in diameter sch 40 water -filled flexible hose fitting weighing approximately 9 lbs. The information provided to the committee showed that the maximum load shed to the suspended ceiling by the flexible hose fitting was approximately 6 lbs and that a suspended ceiling meeting ASTM C-635, Standard Specification for the Manufacture, Performance, and Testing of Metal Suspension of Acoustical Tile and Lay -In Panel Celings, and installed in accordance with ASTM C-636, Standard Practice for Installation of Metal Ceiling Suspension Systems for Acoustical Tile and Lay -In Panels, can substancially support the load. In addition, the supporting material showed that the flexible hose connection can be attached to the suspended ceilings because it allows the necessary deflections under seismic conditions. 0 FlexHead° Flexible Sprinkler Connections Satisfy New Seismic Code Requirements Background of New Code Requirements: More than 90% of the states in the U.S. are adopting the International Building Code (IBC) that address, among other things, the installation of fire sprinkler systems in seismic zones. The code is intended to neutralize the probability of fire sprinkler systems being damaged and made inoperable by seismic activity, including ceiling movement than can shear sprinkler heads and/or TYPtt ally, each, lnit consi`sts.of Pe n,PPie a threaded pipe nipple:for.; connecting to the maih or branch feeder. line, a.flexible:hose in stand#dflehgths;•a reduang fitting i"'_$pnpkler thkAhe sprinkler head attachesao branchline''.: and a mounting -6iaeket. SUNY, University at Buffalo. Tests were conducted using the International Code Council The IBC Code and ICC) acceptance criteria "ICC-ES AC-156 Seismic Qualification Testing of Nonstructural Sprinkler Design in Components". This is the first time a sprinkler component has been seismically certi- fied using test criteria accepted by the ICC. Suspended Ceilings: The latest version of the IBC defers to ASCE 7 for the sprinkler/ceiling design in Seismic Design Categories 9SDC) C and D, E & F. In Seismic Design Category C, suspended ceilings are to be designed and installed in accordance with Ceilings & Interior Systems Construction Association (CISCA) recommendations for Zones 0-2; and sprinkler heads and other penetrations shall have a minimum of 1/4- inch clearance on all sides. In Seismic Design Categories D, E & F, suspended ceilings are to be designed and installed in accordance with CISCA recommendations for seismic Zones 3 and 4 with some additional requirements. Except where rigid braces are used to limit lateral deflections, sprinkler heads and other penetrations shall have a 2-inch oversized ring, sleeve, or adaptor through the ceiling to allow for free movement of at least 1 inch of ceiling movement in all horizontal directions. Flexible Sprinkler Connections Exceed IBC Code Requirements: Flexible sprinkler connection provide characteristics that exceed the most stringent seismic code requirements. The flexibility of the hose allows the head to move with the ceiling in any direction during a seismic event without causing damage to the sprinkler system. FlexHead Industries recently satisfactorily completed full-scale seismic qualification testing at the Structural engineering Earthquake Simulation Laboratory located at the University of Buffalo using the International Code Council (ICC) testing standard "ICC AC-156 Seismic Qualification Testing of Nonstructural Components". This is the first time a sprinkler component has been seismically certified using test criteria accepted by the IBC. FlexHeads were installed in suspended ceilings meeting the code requirements for Seismic Design Category C and Seismic Design Categories D, E & F and were subjected to the highest accelerations determined for each Seismic Design Category. No damage to the fire sprinkler system or suspended ceiling system was observed, and the sprinkler heads remained in their intended location during all of the test performed. LISTED June 21, 2001 FlexHead Industries Mr. Norm MacDonald 56 Lowland St. Holliston, MA 01746 Our Reference: File EX5269 Subject: FlexHead Flexible Sprinkler Hose Fittings Installed Onto Dry Wall Ceiling Grid Dear Mr. MacDonald: This letter is in regard to the subject. Base upon review of the FlexHead UL Listed flexible sprinkler hose fitting system, installation onto a dry wall ceiling grid is acceptable when the ceiling -mounted bracket is screwed to a rigid surface. Self -tapping screws are used to affix the FlexHead mounting bracket to the surface, using the four ports provided which are pre - drilled onto the mounting bracket. Very truly yours, EMIL W. (626) 445.2947 www equipmentanchone com May 18, 2004 I have reviewed the material that was sent to me regarding the flexible sprinkler drops, your company manufactures. As you are aware, our firm focuses its efforts solely on seismic restraint of equipment and ceiling systems. We are quite impressed with the freedom of movement that your solution provides. Regarding ASCE 7; in section 9.6.2.6.2.2 the acceptance criteria states that all sprinkler heads must have a horizontal freedom of movement of at least one inch in every direction. Your flexible sprinkler drops not only provide far more than the specified one inch, but they also allow vertical motion and rotation as well. It is quite apparent that the use of this product would not only conform to the requirements of ASCE 7 but exceed them as well. The FlexHead product is satisfactory and complies with the intent of the provisions of code section 1621 of the IBC and ASCE? subsections 9.6.2.6.2 and 9.6.2.6.2.2 with reference to sprinkler heads having a minimum clearance on all sides; and the product, for the purpose intended, meets or exceeds these provisions of these in quality, strength, effectiveness, fire resistance, durability and safety. They are higher in strength and more corrosion resistant than cast iron fittings. The additional strength is provided by the ductile properties making up the fitting. This is accomplished by adding magnesium while the iron is being poured into it final cast shape. This provides an advantage as the fittings are not as susceptible to leaks or cracking and they are also lighter than standard cast iron. Caution: Installers who have not used ductile iron threaded fittings before should be instructed that the fittings are stronger than the pipe and over - tightening the fitting can create leaks and cause damage to pipe threads. In general, there is about one-half turn difference between cast iron and ductile iron fittings. Apply Teflon tape or high quality pipe joint compound on the male pipe threads and tighten two to three turns beyond hand tight. If you are using an automatic make -on machine, please exercise caution in setting your machine to the proper parameters prior to tightening fittings onto the male pipe threads.
