As pioneers in digital fire technology, Silent Knight delivers superior systems at an outstanding value. Our 5104 Fire Control Communicator has become the industry standard by proving itself in years of field-tested operation. This four -zone fire control communicator provides fast, reliable digital communication of fire and trouble conditions. It transmits via ordinary phone lines — eliminating the need for expensive leased line arrangements. Use it as a stand-alone, or incorporate it into your existing system. Why spec any other digital communicator? Go with the industry standard — the 5104 Fire Control Communicator from Silent Knight. For more information, please call 1-800-446-6444, or in Minnesota, call (612) 493-6435. Model 5104 Fire Control Communicator The Silent Knight Model 5104 is a four -zone fire control communicator providing digital fire reporting over ordinary telephone lines, eliminating the need for costly leased tines. It's UL 864 and NFPA 72 approved for monitoring local evacuation controls. As a stand-alone unit it can be used to monitor: Sprinkler systems for waterflow, supervisory, and gate valve tamper conditions. Automatic fire detection systems for structures that are not required to have a fire alarm system but want property protection (e.g. to call the fire department after hours). Dry contact alarms, trouble and supervisory outputs, then transmits a separate code for each. The Model 5104 is fully supervised. Its microprocessor constantly runs programs to monitor AC, standby battery, zone inputs and telephone line connections. If a fault condition is detected, it sounds a local trouble audible and reports the condition to the central station. If one of the telephone lines faults for more than 45 seconds, it will automatically switch to the other to report the failure. The communicator will signal activation, restoration and trouble conditions on any of four inputs. If an application requires a different input configuration, the individual input styles may be changed by using a Model 7181 Fire Zone Converter Module. The 7181 also allows use of two -wire type smoke detectors, instead of the normal four - wire contact type, for automatic fire detection applications. FEATURES UL 864 Listed for NFPA 72 Central Station and Remote Supervising Station Fire Alarm System Service. Can be used as a stand-alone or as a UDACT. Four fully supervised inputs: one Class A Subgroup Style D input, and three Class B Subgroup B inputs. Downloadable for remote programming. Fuseless overload protection with automatic reset circuitry and fault indicators — eliminates the cause of most field calls. Dual phone line interface. Automatic self test every 24 hours with report sent to central station. Reports in SIA and most major communications formats. 60 hours of standby power. Operates on loop start phase lines ahead of the building PBX system. A single, programmable output is provided for alarm or dialer failed conditions (cannot be used for evacuation purposes). These models are to be used with the ADT Focus 200 Fire Alarm Control Panel. A pulsed infrared light -emitting diode serves as the light source, and a high-speed photo -diode as the sensing element. This design has superior protection against false alarms caused by dust, insects, RF and ambient -light. SeH-Diagnostics Includes Automatic Sensitivity Testing The 429/428CAD 8 CTAD continually monitors its own sensitivity and operational status. Upon power -up and, once every 24 hours the detector performs a full diagnostic test that includes dynamically testing the sensing chamber and internal electronics. If a detector fails internal diagnostics, the alarm LED will flash once every second, the. detector will continue to operate, and the Fire Alarm Control Panel will be sent a trouble signal indicating that the detector needs immediate servicing. If the detector is outside its UL Listed sensitivity range, the alarm LED will flash once every second and the Fire Alarm Control Panel will be sent a diagnostic signal indicating that the detector needs to be cleaned. INSTALLATION The 429/428CAD & CTAD detectors mount to standard single -gang electrical boxes, four -inch octagonal or four -inch square electrical boxes, or on WIREMOLD No. 5739 fixture boxes. First, pull wire through the electrical box and connect to the plug-in terminal block supplied, one wire per terminal (see Diagrams 1 and 2). Second, dress wiring neatly and snap the terminal block into the back of the detector. Note: The detector cover must be closed completely, to support the circuit board. while installing the terminal block. Now, open the cover and mount the detector, using the mounting holes provided see Diagram 4). All ESL smoke detectors are shipped with a plastic dust cover for use in areas where construction is on -going. Smoke detectors will not operate with the dust cover in place. Remove the dust cover when installation is completed, prior to testing. When the detector is wall mounted, the top of the detector should be 4 to 12 inches (100-300 mm) from the ceiling (see Diagram 3). Refer to NFPA 72 for further mounting instructions. When more than one detector is required, spacing of 30 feet (9.1 meters) may be used as a guide on smooth ceilings (as defined in NFPA 72). Other spacing may be used depending on ceiling height, high air movement, and other conditions or response requirements. Diagram 3 100 min) ceiling I 4 + I acceptable here1here a m 100 min) minimum nvmr 2'in. M min) top of detector _ mammum acceplable here i I sidewall 1 Where NOT To Place Detectors One of the major causes of nuisance alarms is improper placement of detectors. Avoid locating detectors too close to kitchens or wood stoves, where smoke can be generated. Garages and furnace rooms are poor locations, due to exhaust fumes. Placing detectors too close to bath- rooms can cause problems from steamy baths or showers. Do not install detectors where normal ambient temperature can be over 100`F (37.8°C), such as attics. Refer to NFPA 72 for more information. In all cases, detectors should be cleaned once a year, to prevent dust and dirt build- up. -See cleaning instructions. Testing -the Installation After all connections are complete and the wiring is checked for errors, apply power to the system. There should be no alarm. If an alarm is reported, determine if a detector is in alarm or if there is a problem with the wiring. All smoke detectors shall be tested at least annually in accordance with NFPA 72. Smoke detectors may be tested with UL Listed canned smoke, a smoldering punk stick or a cotton wick. If UL Listed canned smoke is used, carefully follow manufacturer's directions to prevent damage to the detector. The detector samples for smoke about every 9 seconds, while flashing its LED. If smoke is detected, the sampling increases to every 4.5 seconds.; Excessive smoke must be detected in three consecutive samples for the alarm to sound. Therefore, when testing the -detector with smoldering punks or cotton wicks, hold the smoke source near the smoke entry and gently direct smoke into the detector for 20 seconds or until an alarm is indicated. BE SURE TO PROPERLY EXTINGUISH THE SMOKE SOURCE AFTER TESTING! This is a gotno-go test and is not a reliable indication of the detectors sensitivity. Control unit alarm and all auxiliary functions should be verified for a complete test of each detector. The 429/428CTAD samples for heat every 4.5 seconds. Test the heat sensor by using a hot air gun. Aim the hot air gun at the heat sensor from 6-10' away. The detector should go into alarm in less than 30 seconds. Be careful not to melt the plastics. MAINTENANCE, CLEANING and SENSITIVITY TESTING This series of self -diagnostic smoke detectors is designed for easy field service and maintenance. If a detector drifts beyond its approved sensitivity range for more than 24 hours, or fails internal diagnostic tests, the unit automatically indicates trouble. This meets NFPA 72 field sensitivity testing requirements without the need for external -meters. In accordance with NFPA 72, smoke detector sensitivity should be checked within one year after installation and every alternate year thereafter. The replaceable sensing chamber of the 400 series photoelectric detector unsnaps for easy field cleaning and service. Whenever the status LED indicates cleaning is necessary, open the detector cover, unsnap.and throw away optical block chamber. Then thoroughly blow off the optical base and snap a new optical block chamber (part #211) back in place. NOTE: Be sure new optical block chamber is seated all the way down. Close detector cover and verity sensitivity with the sensitivity level test (below). Sensitivity Level Test Mode To activate the sensitivity test mode hold a magnet near the integral reed switch on the hinge side of the detector for more than one second (see Diagram 6). The sensitivity test mode may also be activated from the control panel (see control panel installation manual for details). Upright, Pendent, and Rec. Pendent Sprinklers are quick response - standard coverage, decorative glass bulb type spray sprinklers designed for use in light & ordinary hazard, commercial occupancies such as banks, hotels, shopping malls etc. The recessed version of the Central Model BV-OR, intended for use in areas with a finished ceiling, uses a two-piece Model BV Res/QR Recessed Escutcheon Vented or Unvented). The Model BV Res/OR Recessed Escutcheon provides up to 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) of total adjustment from the flush pendent position. The recessed version of the Central Model BVLO-OR, also intended for use in areas with a finished ceiling, uses a two-piece Model ELO Recessed Escutcheon. The Model ELO Recessed Escutcheon provides up to 314 inch (19.1 mm) of total adjustment from the flush pendent position. The adjustment provided by these Recessed Escutcheons reduces the accuracy to which the fixed pipe drops to the sprinklers must be cut. These sprinklers are available with a polyester coating that may be utilized to extend the life of copper alloy sprinklers beyond that which would otherwise be obtained when exposed to corrosive atmospheres. Although polyester coated sprinklers have passed the standard corrosion tests of the applicable approval agencies, the testing is not representative of all possible corrosive atmospheres. Consequently, it is recommended that the end user be consulted with respect to the suitability of this corrosion resistant coating for any given corrosive environment The effects of ambient temperature, concentration of chemicals, and gastchemical velocity, chemical to which the sprinklers will be exposed. Operation: The glass bulb contains a fluid which expands when exposed to heat. When the rated temperature is reached. the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb, which then allows the sprinkler to activate & flow water. WARNING The Model BV-QR & BVLO-OR Upright, Pendent & Rec. Pendent Sprinklers described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the integrity of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintaining their tire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted relative to any questions. Pendent Sprinklers, a Protective Cap is available which helps to prevent damage to the sprinkler during ceiling installation or during application of the finish coating of the ceiling. Place the Protective Cap over the Recessed Support Cup and push it upwards until it bottoms out against the sprinkler deflector. NOTE As long as the Protective Cap remainns in place, the system is considered "Out of Service. " Step 5. After the ceiling has been completed, remove and discard the Protective Cap. If the sprinkler has been damaged, replace the entire sprinkler assembly. Do not attempt to modify or repair a damaged sprinkler. Step 6. Push the outer ring of the Recessed Escutcheon over the Recessed Support Cup. Do not continue to push on the Recessed Escutcheon such that it lifts a ceiling panel out of its normal position. If the Outer Recessed Escutcheon Ring cannot be engaged with the Recessed Support Cup or the Outer Recessed Escutcheon Ring cannot be engaged sufficiently to contact the ceiling, the sprinkler fitting must be repositioned. Care & Maintenance The Model BV-QR & BVLO QR Spnnklers must be maintained and serviced in accordance with the following instructions. NOTES Absence of an escutcheon ;which is used to cover a clearance hole. may delay the time to operation in a fire situation. Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the Are protection system it controls, permission to shut down the affected fire protection systems must be obtained from the proper authorities. All personnel who may be affected by this action must be notified. Sprinklers which are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be shipped or stored where their tempera- tures will exceed 100'F/3WC and they must never be painted. plated, coated or otherwise altered after leaving the factory. Modified sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be replaced if they cannot be completely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid damage before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers damaged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be replaced. Also, replace any sprinkler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb (Ref. Installation Section). Frequent visual inspections are recom- mended to be initially performed for polyester coated sprinklers installed in corrosive environments, after the installation has been completed, to verity the integrity of the polyester coating. Thereafter, annual inspections per NFPA 25 should suffice: however, instead of inspecting from the floor level, a random sampling of dose -up visual inspections should be made, so as to better determine the exact sprinkler condition and the long term integrity of the polyester coating, as it may be affected by the corrosive condi- tions present. The owner is responsible for the inspec- tion, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and devices in compli- ance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association (e.g., NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufac- turer should be contacted relative to any questions. It is recommended that automatic sprinkler systems be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service. Check the pipe seal surface within 5/5" of the hole to be certain it is free from conditions which would affect proper gasket sealing. Remove any sharp or rough edges from the hole or upper housing contact area, which might affect assembly, proper seating of the locking collar or flow from the outlet. Check gasket grade to be certain it is suitable for the service. For crosses, ensure double outlet holes are aligned on opposite sides of the pipe. The use of threaded products other than steel pipe, such as dry pendents, etc. may not be compatible with the female threaded outlet on the Mechanical Tee. Always confirm compatibility by contacting Central. Note: Outlet threads conforming to BSP are available, contact Central for details. GROOVED PIPING PRODUCTS 01998 Central Grooved Piping Products 730.09.98 Printed in U.S.A. Threaded Fittings Ductile Iron ANSI B16.3 ® !f Manufactured by: Central Grooved Piping Products, Inc. a subsidiary of Central Sprinkler Company 451 North Cannon Avenue, Lansdale, Pennsylvania 19446 is Product Description Central Ductile Iron threaded fittings conform to ANSI B16.3 and are higher in strength and more corrosion resistant than cast iron fittings. The additional strength is provided by the ductile properties making up the fitting. This is accomplished by adding magnesium while the iron is being poured into its final cast shape. This provides an advantage as the fittings are not as susceptible to leaks or cracking and they are also lighter than standard cast iron. Caution: Installers who have not used ductile iron threaded fittings before should be instructed that the fitting is stronger than the pipe and over -tightening the fitting can create leaks and cause damage to pipe threads. In general, there is about one-half a turn difference between cast iron and ductile iron fittings. Apply Teflon tape or high quality pipe joint compound on the pipe threads and tighten two to three turns beyond hand tight. If you are using an automatic make - on machine, please exercise caution in setting your machine to the proper parameters prior to tightening fittings onto the male pipe threads. Scwd.1 DynamThread a Full Line Sch-40 Replacement Dyna-Thread offers the life expectancy of Sch40 with superior hydraulics and greater value. Dyna-Thread sprinkler pipe represents an engineering advancement for the sprinkler pipe industry. It combines the safety and longevity of traditional Sch-40 pipe with quality and superior hydraulic advantages. Comparison to Schedule 40 Dyna-Thread's inside diameter is up to 3.6% larger than Sch-40 giving it superior hydraulics. And, when used in combination with Dyna-Flow pipe, down sizing often occurs. Dyna-Thread is fully listed and approved by UL, ULC, and FM for fire sprinkler applications. The life expectancy of Dyna-Thread and Sch-40 are equal based on the calculated wall thicknesses per UL. The consistent quality of steel used to make Dyna-Thread facilitates smooth threading and lower maintenance costs. The exterior of Dyna-Thread is protected by a clean, durable mill coating for extended shelf life and easy paint application. UL <S>UDC Listed Approved Listed With its increased strength and lighter weight, Dyna-Thread reduces installation fatigue and is ideal for retro-fit applications. Corrosion Resistance Ratio (CRR) is a UL (Underwriters Laboratory) term for the estimated life expectancy of a pipe joint. This is based on the calculated wall thickness at the base of the first exposed thread, assumed to be the weakest point of the pipe length. Dyna- Thread and Sch-40 have the same calculated wall thicknesses at this point and are both assigned the same CRR of 1.00. The internal surface of all black Allied Tube & Conduit Fire Sprinkler pipe products up to 4.5000" in diameter is coated with our new Antibacterial Formula, "ABF". In scientific laboratory test, ABS proved to have superior resistance to microbial colonization of pipe walls, thereby delaying or possibly preventing the onset of Microbiologically Influenced corrosion MIC) when the First Sprinkler System is first installed.
