INSIDE CORNER POST: The applica- tion of the Inside comer post is the same as that for the outside corner' post, and the •erne ogre *hcuici tie used. BOTH TYPES OF COINER POSTS are Installed before the siding is applied. Having these items plumb is particularly important. Make certain the comer post is installed square. S. WINDOW & DOOR TRIM Trim J -channel is used around windows and doors to receive siding. Side J -channel members are cut longer than the height of the window or door, and notched at the top as shown. Anter cut the free flange at a 460 angle and bend tab <. ..down to provide, flashing over side members. n is recommended to caulk . around windows and doors before in- stalling trim pieces. Flashing To further prevent water from getting behind siding, a flashing piece is alt from coil stock and slipped under the base of the side J -channel members and positioned so as to lap over the top lock of the panel below (see sketch). Flash around windows and doors as required. 6. GABLE END TRIM Before applying siding, J -channel should be installed to receive siding at the gable ends. Where the left and right sections meet at the gable peak, let one of the sectiopss butt into the peak with the other section overlapping. A miter cut is made on the face flange of this piece for better appearance. All old paint build-up should be removed be- fore Installing J -channels. CHALK UNE: It Is best to establish the chalk line in relation to the eaves or the top and bottom of the windows atter determining the lowest comer of the house. Snap a chalk line at required height. In cases where the lower portion of a horizontal siding panel must be trim- med so that it may be installed over steps, porches. etc., the panel should be furred for proper cant (angle) and rigidity. Undersill trim can be used to seal the CIA edge of the panel, and se. cured to the well. 2. HORIZONTAL STARTER STRIP: Using the chalk line or cord as a guide, Install starter strip along the bottom of the building, 'Allow space for comer Posts, J• channels, etc. Keep ends of starter strips at least 114" apart to allow for expansion. Nail In center of nailing slots. Align with windows and eaves. it using Insulatlon or backerboard, shim it necessary to accommodate thickness. (FOR VERTICAL STARTER STRIP: See section on vertical siding) 3. OUTSIDE CORNER POST: It is placed in position allowing 1/4" at the top. Position nail by nailing at the top of the upper slot. Balance of nailing should be In center of slots 6" to 12" on center. This allows for the expansion and contraction to occur at the bottom.. When siding is installed, 1W space should be maintained in the channel section of tie corner post. 'k' r-1 i4" space at top of wall !i 25752 13 ° k.9 t 3 n RES11XNG FURRING STRAPPING Applying weather resistant sheathing over old siding is the fastest, easiest way to provide an even, nallable sur- face for vinyl sidlnp installation. If not using sheathing, furring or strap- ping should be used on uneven walls or masonry surfaces to provide an even and naiiable base. Shim out the Curring at the high and low spots to get a final even surface. Furring may be vertical or horizontal, de- pending on the type of panels being in- stalled. Strapping should be placed alongside all door and window frames and building comers. Accessories should be attached over strapping where needed. Do not fur out farther than necessary since the alignment of the siding at doors and windows may be difficult. 4. NEW CONSTRUCTION — PROPER WALL PREPARATION Framing studs should be plumb and positloned uniformly to pro- vide a flat surface for the sheathing. This is much more attainable with the use of quality, kiln -dried studs. Wall sheathing can be manufactured from a variety of materials. To obtain the beft finished appearance for solid vinyl siding, use quality sheathing with no buckling or warping. Exterior quality wood sheathing, properly conditioned and fastened will eliminate the possibility of swelling and buckling caused by unstable wood. 12 M 25752 x * s x ®d :✓ ■ ■ , ®' Frit panel Is placed ielatarc®r strip and se- curely locked.
