For East/West running rafters, spacing is determined by the rafters. Rafters can be located by notingnailsinthefaciaboard. Use a chalk line up the roof above the rafter and pinpoint it by "feeling it" withfinishingnails. Cover the nail heads with silicone seal or bull. The bracket should be located abovethefinishingnailstoensureagoodseal. Strut should be perpendicular to roof or slope back slightly. For a panel mounted flat on a sloping roof, use the strongback to locate the mounting points (notnecessarywhenusinganglebrackets. If solar panel is to lie flat on sloping roof (typical on asphalt shingles, use 4 ledge clip angle brackets. Fasten brackets to roof rafters — two above and two below. Place silicone seal under bracket and on topoflagscrewhead. Use Tek screws to fasten to solar panel. Prepare roof to receive pitch pan. For asphalt roof, place on flat area. Part of the one shingle may have to be removed. For concrete tile, remove part of tile to expose slate. For tar and gravel, remove as much gravel as possible and soften roof tar with paint thinner. Drill pilot holes for lag screws —15/64" max. Coat screw threads with silicone seal. Place roofing cement under pitch pan and feet bracket; bolt assembly into rafter using lag screws. Ply- wood blocks under the mounting brackets and long brackets are needed for concrete or barrel tile roofs. Fill pitch pan with roofing cement or pitch. Grout in concrete file roof with white or gray mortar mix. Attach strongbacks and strut (if in use) to feet brackets. The two "stand alone" triangles will stiffen up when the collector is attached. Mount PV panel on solar collector. Cover to protect against sunlight. Run wire to pump and use red wire for + terminal or panel and connect to red lead (+) on pump. Remove cover on PV panel. Run piping as shown in drawing. Carefully insulate pipe and glue or tape}oints. Ensure check valve vertical with arrow pointing downward. To ensure drainage and proper flow, leave no traps. See note below. In attic area, use copper coil to avoid solder joints. Slope pipes to allow for drainage of system. Place collector on strongbacks and drill 3/16" pilot holes in side of collector box. Fasten in place with self -drilling Tek screws. Ensure all mounting bolts tight. Mount freeze valve close to roof on line from collector to tank. Freeze valve should be about 18" from line (collector to tank). Do not insulate the 18" to the valve. Connect piping and carefully insulate. Leave no bare pipe. This includes cold supply hot service lines at top of tank. Important: Where sections of insulation butt against each other, glue or tape joint. Paint outside insulation white. Cap tank side connect.* Fill system with water. Air will vent from collector via automatic air vent — ensure that cap is loose. Set thermostat to approximately 120 degrees. (higher for winter weather) Note: 1. Do the following when penetrating the roof with piping. Take a piece of copper flashing approximately 6" x 6". Drill a 5/8" hole and run a 10" piece of 1/2 cooper tubing into the hole. Solder the connection with 95/5 solder_ Then drill a 5/8" hole into the roof below the collector inlet and outlet. Butter up the flashing with plastic roof cement and run the pipe into the hole. Fasten the flashing with roofing nails and bond strips of roofing felt around the flashing perimeter with plastic roofing cement. Cover entire flashing with roofing cement. 2. For flat roofs, use extended feet brackets in one side to raise collector for good drainage. A 4'x 10' collector should be 5" — 6" higher on one end. On sloping roofs, try to mount long dimension vertical. Not necessary when using prepiped tanks. PV SYSTEM FOR WELL SYSTEMS The PV freeze protection system requires water pressure to force warm water through the solar panel and out the valve. If a power failure occurs in a home with a well, water pressure will eventually be lost. It is highly unlikely that a freeze condition and an electrical power failure will occur simultaneously and it is also unlikely that the water pressure will be lost completely since the expansion tank will continue to pressurize the system for a period of time. But it may happen and thereby cause the solar collector to freeze. Therefore for homes that receive their water from a well, we have modified the installation as follows: 1. Include a vacuum breaker (suggest Watts 36A) at the collector output near the relief valve. 2. Include a second freeze valve or a valve that opens when pressure is lost at the input to the collector. 3. Mount the solar collector with the long dimension vertical. If the long dimension is to be horizontal, raise one end 5-1/2". SDI has special brackets for this. The above procedure will allow the collector to drain if water pressure is lost during a power failure.
