SUMMARY
Claim # 146342
1002 Celery Ave.
Sanford, FL 32771
The structural damage to the subject single family residence resulting from
the tree impact during the high winds of the recent hurricanes was visually
inspected and evaluated on January7th, 2005. The tree had impacted onto the east side
of the home and caused significant damage to the carport flat roof structure. Based
on the visual inspection of the masonry exterior wall structure on the right end of the
home and the front end of the utility room making up two sides of the carport roof, there
was no structural damage to the load bearing exterior structures. Based on
the extent of the damage, the life safety issues of the CODE will be required
to be addressed on the interior of the home during the repair and restoration.
A Repair and Restoration Specification is provided In compliance with
the requirements of the FLORIDA BUILDING CODE 2001. DISCUSSION
The
structural damage resulting from the tree impact during the high winds of the
recent hurricane to the carport roof of a single family residence located at the PROFESSIONAL
ENGINEER # 17402
1002 Celery Ave., Sanford, FL 2of10
above address. This had occurred after the carport roof had been breeched by the tree
during the very heavy rains of the hurricane. The primary structural damage was to total loss
of the carport portion of the new flat roof system over the utility/storage room on the near of
the carport, the roof directly over the carport, and the front poach roof. The entire flat roof
system on the subject home was recently re -roofed as a built-up asphalt layers over felt
paper, and covered with Chattahoochee smooth stones. The single story home is
constructed of 8" CMU including three sides of the utility/storage room. The carport roof
was supported by 2x6 rafters at 16' on enter, tied to the house wall on one side and
decorative 8' rot iron post sustaining a 4X8 wood beam on the other side. The entire 12'-8"
X 22' carport roof plus the 2' overhangs must be replaced.
REPAIR AND RESTORATION SPECIFICATION
This repair and restoration specification addresses the structural damage resulting
from the tree impact to the single family residence located at 1002 Celery Ave.,
Sanford (32771). The specification provides that all of the repair and restoration
is to be done in essential compliance with the requirements of the FLORIDA BUILDING
CODE (FBC) 2001 and the 2003 Revisions.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
Demolition — Most all of the damaged roof structure has been removed with the
exception of the damaged ledger on the right end of the main house that supports the
carport roof. The front porch 4x8 beam must be braced until it is secured to the new
column "K.
Flat Built-up Roof Structure — The missing 12'-8" x 22' section of the missing
carport roof must be rebuilt completely including the 2' overhangs. In order to
support the new roof and wind loads, it is necessary build three new columns
along outward end of the roof, and the inward side will be tied into the block
walls of the main house and utility/storage room. This new flat roof will tie into
the existing flat roofs above the porch and utility room. The new built-up asphalt
roof will also be covered with Chattahoochee stone on 1x6 T & G #2 SYP. The
2x6 fascia board will tie into the existing porch and utility room roof. The new
2x6 roof rafters shall be spaced at 16" on center, and shall rest on the replaced
ledger support on the exist right end masonry wall of the main house. This new
band board and ledger shall be secured to the masonry wall using %" x 4"
wedge bolts staggered @ 3' on center, and W x 4" Tapcons staggered @ 16"
O.C. See Cross -Section "A -A". The other end shall rest on a new composite
8x8 beam secured in two adjacent pairs with Simpson HUC28-2 pairs attached
to either the new CMU columns or the existing block walls. These two new
columns identified as Columns "B" and "C" which are 12"x 16" block piers are 8'-
4" high above the carport concrete slab. The two piers rest partially on the

existing carport slab and the new footers, and the steel reinforcement is
embedded through the existing slab to a depth of 12" and secured with Simpson
Set Epoxy ET. The carport rafters are secured on each end with Simpson H4
with a uplift capability of 360#.
Concrete Masonry Piers — Column "A" as shown in Addendums "A" & "B"
supports the corners of the porch and the front left of the carport flat roofs. It is
an eight inch square vertical reinforced CMU with a top elevation of 100" above
the reference carport concrete slab. The column is supported by a 20' square
steel reinforced footer that is 18" deep. This footer extends under the stone
planter, porch slab and the carport slab, thus locking it in position.
Columns "B" & "C" support the right end wall of the new carport roof and are
approximately 10' apart. It is made up of 12" masonry block that measures 12"x
16" with a top elevation of 8'- 4" above the concrete slab. These two columns
are supported by a 2' square reinforced footer that are 2' deep. See Addendum
B". These footers extend under the slab as shown in cross section "B-B", thus
locking it in position. The two piers rest partially on the existing carport slab and
the new footers, and a 3' threaded steel rod is embedded through the existing
slab to a depth of 12" and secured with Simpson Set Epoxy ET. A large 3"
washer and bolt is placed on the bottom of the threaded rod to lock it into the
new footer. The carport rafters are secured on each end with Simpson H4 with
a uplift capability of 360#.
Roof Sheathing - The roof had been provided with 1 "X6" T&G wood board
sheathing. The replacement 1 "X6" board sheathing must be secured to each
rafter employing a minimum of 2 - 10d nails. The boards must be installed such
that they are supported on a minimum of three rafters. The butt joints of the rafter
boards for adjacent boards can not occur over the same rafter.
Overhang and Fascia - The 2' overhang and 2x6 fascia must be repaired and
restored in a workmanship like manner to match the existing structures on the
residence.
Roof Covering - The carport built-up roof and gravel cover on the entire new carport roof must be
installed. This must be done by a suitably licensed and experienced roofing contractor in
compliance with all of the requirements of the CODE.
