STRAPPiNa Applying weather resistant sheathing over old siding is the fastest, easiest way to provide an even, nallable sur- face for vinyl siding installation. If not using sheathing, furring or strap- ping should be used on uneven walls or masonry surfaces to provide an even and nallable base. Shim out the furring at the high and low spots to get a final even surface. Furring may be vertical or horizontal, de- pending on the type of panels being In. stalled. Strapping should be placed alongside all door and window frames and building comers. Accessories should be attached over strapping where needed. Do not fur out farther than necessary since the alignment of the siding at doors and windows may be difficult. 4. NEW CONSTRUCTION — PROPER WALL PREPARATION Framing studs should be plumb and positioned uniformly to pro- vide a flat surface for the sheathing. This is much more attainable with the use of quality, kiln -dried studs. Wall sheathing can be manufactured from a variety of materials. To obtain the best finished appearance for solid vinyl siding, use quality sheathing with no budding or warping. Exterior quality wood sheathing, property conditioned and fastened will eliminate the possibility of swelling and buckling caused by unstable wood. 12 Ly 25752 Y- 9. Mter cut the free flange at a W angle and bend tab down to provide• flashing over side members. It is recommended to caulk around windows and doors before in- stalling trim pieces. Flashing To further prevent water from getting behind siding, a flashing piece is cut from coil stock and slipped under the base of the side J-channel members and positioned so as to lap over the top loco of the panel beiow (see sketch). Flash around windows and doors as. required. 6. GABLE END TRINE Before applying siding, J-channel should be installed to receive siding at the gable ends. Where the left and right sections meet at the gable peak, lei one of the sections butt Into the peak with the other section overlapping. A miter cut is made on the face flange of this piece for better appearance. All old paint build-up should be removed be- fore Installing J-channels. CHALK LINE: It is best to establish the } chalk line in relation to the eaves or the top and bottom of the windows after determining the lowest comer of the house. Snap a chalk line at required height. In cases where the lower portion of a horl2ontal siding panel must be trim- med so that it may be Installed over steps. porches, etc., the panel should be furred for proper Cant (angle) and rigidity. Underslll trim .can be used to seal the wt edge of the panel, and se. cured to the wall. 2. HORIZONTAL STARTER STRIP: 11 Using the chalk line or cord as a guide, Install starter strip along the bottom of the building. 'Allow space for comer Posts, J- channels, etc. Keep ends of starter strips at least 114" apart to allow for expansion. Nail In center of nailing slots. Align with windows and eaves. It using insulation or backerboard. shim it necessary to accommodate thickness. FOR VERTICAL STARTER STRIP: See section on vertical siding) 3. OUTSIDE CORNER POST: it is placed in position allowing 1/4" at the top. Position nail by nailing at the top of the upper slot. Balance of nailing should be In center of slots fi" to 12" on center. This allows for the expansion and contraction to occur at the bottom. When siding is installed, 1/4" space should be maintained in the channel section of the corner post. 13
