Threaded Fittings
Ductile Iron
ANSI B16.3
Manufactured by: Central Grooved Piping Products, Inc. a subsidiary of
Central Sprinkler Company
451 North Cannon Avenue, Lansdale, Pennsylvania 19446
Product
Description
Central Ductile Iron threaded fittings
conform to ANSI B16.3 and are
higher in strength and more corrosion
resistant than cast iron fittings. The
additional strength is provided by the
ductile properties making up the
fitting. This is accomplished by
adding magnesium while the iron is
being poured into its final cast shape.
This provides an advantage as the
fittings are not as susceptible to
leaks or cracking and they are also
lighter than standard cast iron.
Caution: Installers who have not
used ductile iron threaded fittings
before should be instructed that
the fitting is stronger than the pipe
and over -tightening the fitting can
create leaks and cause damage to
pipe threads. In general, there is
about one-half a turn difference
between cast iron and ductile iron
fittings. Apply Teflon tape or high
quality pipe joint compound on the
pipe threads and tighten two to
three turns beyond hand tight. If
you are using an automatic make -
on machine, please exercise
caution in setting your machine to
the proper parameters prior to
tightening fittings onto the male
pipe threads.

Description
The Figure 772 Rigid Coupling
provides a rigid joint by firmly
gripping along the circumference of
the pipe grooves. Rigid Couplings
are preferred for dry pipe and
freezer applications. Central rigid
couplings are a proven dependable
method of joining pipe and are an
economical alternative to welding,
threading or using flanges, and can
be used on a variety of pipe material
and wall thicknesses. The Figure
772 Coupling is UL Listed for
grounding and bonding, and is
suitable for bonding systems with a
maximum service entrance capacity
of 200 amps.

r3Installation
Check gasket color code to ensure
that the gasket is suitable for
intended application.
Cover edges and outer surface of
the gasket with a thin layer of
petroleum -free silicon lubricant or
equivalent. Silicon gasket lubricant
and tri-seal freezer gaskets are
recommended for freezer
applications. Please refer to
Gasket Recommendations" sheet
for additional information.
Install the gasket by placing the
gasket over the pipe and ensure that
the gasket lip does not overhang the
pipe end. Bring both pipe ends
together, ensure proper alignment
and slide the gasket into position,
properly centering it between the
grooved portions of each pipe.
4. The Figure 772 Coupling has a
tongue and recess arrangement.
Place the coupling housings over
the gasket so that the housing keys
fully engage into grooves making
sure that the tongue is mated to the
recess. Insert the bolts into the
coupling and assemble the nuts
onto the bolts.
Note: Selected sizes of the Figure 772
Coupling incorporate a "Universal
Tongue and Recess" feature which
will be incorporated on additional
sizes in the future. These coupling
housings have identical tongue/
recess pairs at each end, which
allow an engagement fit no matter
which end of the housing is brought
together. For additional information,
please contact Central.
Tighten nuts uniformly until proper
torque is obtained (see chart),
keeping the gaps at the bolt pads
evenly spaced . Gasket should not
be visible after tightening. The
Figure 772 couplings do not have
to meet Bolt Pad to Bolt Pad to
insure proper installation.
Caution -uneven tightening can
cause gasket pinching.
Note: Never remove any piping
component without verifying
that the system is
depressurized and drained.

ACCURACY:
Accuracy -the conformity of indica-
tion to an accepted standard or true
value. Accuracy is the difference (er-
ror) between the true value and the
indication expressed as a percent of
the span. It includes the combined
effects of method, observer, appara-
tus and environment. Accuracy error
includes hysteresis and repeatability
errors but not friction error. It is deter-
mined under specific conditions. (Nor-
mal position, 73.4°F (23°C), and 29.92
in Flg barometric pressure.)
The following tables define the
ASME 13,10.1 and DIN accuracy
rir-r;ies used by Ashcroft products.
Accuracy of a pressure gauge may L
expressed as percent of span or per-
cent of indicated reading. Percent of
span is the most common method.
Percent of indicated reading is usu,-il'iy
limited to precision test gauges and
unless specifically spelled out, it may
be assumed that an accuracy of ±'/z%
means ±'/2% of span.
GRADE 4A:
gauges offer the highest accuracy and
are calibrated to ±0.1 % of span over
the entire range of the gauge. The
gauges are called laboratory precision
test gauges and are generally 8%2",
12", or 16" dials. These high -accuracy
gauges may be temperature compen-
sated. They must be handled carefully
in order to retain accuracy.
GRADE 3A:
gauges are calibrated to an accuracy
of ±0.25% of span over the entire
range of the gauge. The gauges are
called test gauges and are generally
4%2", 6" or 8i2" dials. The gauges are
generally not temperature compen-
t,:d (except Ashcroft Type 1032).

it. They are often ruleno
process gauges and are usually sup-
plied as 41/2" and 6" cases and are not
temperature compensated.
GRADE 1A:
ynuges are calibrated to an accur,
of ± 1 % over the entire range of the
gauge. These gauges are high -quality
industrial gauges and are supplied in
2'/2", 3'/" and 41/2" sizes.
GRADE A:
gauges are calibrated to an accuracy
of ±1 % of span over the middle half of

The last item (30" Hg/30 psi)deserves some explanation. The span is
defined as the algebraic difference between the limits of the scale. 30" Hg
14.7 psi Span = 30 psi -(-14.7) = 44.7 psi. 0.1 % of 44.7 psi = 045 psi
or .022 Hg.

first and last quarters of the scale.
These gauges are often referred to as
industrial gauges and are usually sup-
plied in 2'/", 3W and 4'/" case sizes.

gauges are calibrated to an accuracy
of ±2% of span over the middle half of
the scale and ±3% of span over the
first and last quarters of the scale.
