SANFO.RD, FLORIDA, Dec. 18 at 7:30 P M 19 "39 The City Commission of the City of Sanford, Florida, met in adjourned session at the City Hall in the City of Sanford, Florida at 7:30 o'clock P.M. December 18, 1939 Present: Commissioner Edward Higgins, Mayor. " Walter S. Coleman " H. James Gut " M. J Lodge " G.E.Rollins City Attorney Fred R.Wilson City Clerk H N Sayer. Meeting called to order by the Chairman. A Committee consisting of a number of residents and members of the Municipal 225 Golf Course with Messrs. Roy Symes, G.K. Fullager and E. Compton as spokesmen, next presented a petition signed by eighty -eight citizens and residents of Sanford and vicinity requesting the Commission to rescind its action at the meeting of December 11th. dispensing with the services of Mr. A C Fort as manager of the Municipal Golf Course. matter. Thereupon Commissioner Rollins moved that further consideration be given to the Seconded by Commissioner Lodge and carried. Thereupon after considerable discussion, Commissioner Gut moved that the action of the Commission at the meeting of Dec. 11th. dispensing with the-services of Mr. A C Fort as manager of the Municipal Golf Course effective Dec. 31,1939 be sustained, and that the City pay Mr. Fort his salary through the month of January 1940. Seconded by Commissioner Coleman and carried. Mrs. T.J.Murff next appeared with further reference to an adjustment of the delinquent taxes for years 1928 thru 1939 amounting to $613.82 against Lot 9, Stendiford's Addition, submitting an offer of $100.00 as full settlement, and some was refused. Petition next received from merchants and business men on Sanford Avenue between First Street and Sixth Street that strings of colored lights similar to those now over First Street , Park Avenue and Magnolia Avenue be suspended over Sanford Avenue in these five blocks. Thereupon in view of the fact that no funds are available at this time for the installation of the colored lights covered by this petition, same was ordered filed for future consideration. Application next received from M.D.Kersey for permit to sell liquor to be con- sumed on premises ( bar) on West Thirteenth Street in Goldsboro, and upon the request of Chief of Police Williams, same was refused. Futher consideration next given to the request for a street light'-at the inter- section of Eleventh Street and pine Avenue. Thereupon the Clerk was instructed to advise those requesting this light that the City is not in a position to make this installation, due to the fact that no funds were appropriated for this purpose. Request next received from Montez Harris that the City waive the license in amount of $40.00 and allow Silas Green's Minstrel to show in Sanford On December 28th. under the auspices of the Colored Woman's Club, stating that the Colored Woman's Club is sponsoring the WPA colored sewing room project and that all funds received by them from the minstrel show will be used for this purpose. Thereupon after careful consideration, the Commission refused to waive the 226 MINUTES f 9 CITY COMMISSION, SANFORD, FLORIDA, Dec. 18, 7:30 P M 39 license but agreed to make a donation toward the sponsor's ,hare of the WPA colored sewing room project. Further consideration next given to the installation of a new water service main on Elm Avenue between Sixth and Seventh St., and Eight4 and Ninth Street in order to provide an adequate water supply for the consumerslin these two blocks. Thereupon , on motion duly carried, the Commission 4uthorized And instructed the Water Department to install a 1i" water mods on Elm Avenue between Sixth and Seventh St. and Eighth and Ninth St., the estimated cost be ng $150.00 Engineer Fred T. Williams next reported that there are sufficient paving brick on hand to widen Ninth Street to 32 feet in width from Par Ave. West to the Railroad and recommended that this be done instead of widening it t4 30 feet in width as specifi in the WPA paving project, and on motion duly adopted same gas authorized.
