Meeting called to order by the Chairman who announced that the meeting had been
called at the request of H.M. Watson as President of the Sanford Baswball Association to
consider the financial condition of the baseball team.
Thereupon Mr. Watson advised the Commission of his inability to raise funds sufficient
to pay players' salaries and league assessments and requested a donation of $1000.00 from
the City to pay these items, Mr. Watson stating that otherwise he would not be able to
carry on any further end the franchise would be forfeited to the league.
Thereupon considerable discussion arose, but in view of the fact that Mr. Watson had
been operating the baseball team for profit as an individual trading under the name of the
Sanford Baseball Association and the Oity not being legally empowered to make donations
to private enterprizes, request denied.
Thereupon Mr. Matson surrendered his lease dated Feb. 23, 1938 for the Municipal
Athletic Field and same was accepted by the Commission.
The meeting then adjourned.
