Meeting called to order by the CHairman who announced that the ~urp. o~ · of the meeting was to confer with Lieutenant Commander R.H.Meade, Public Works Officer of the United States Naval Air Station, Jacksonville Florida, with reeoect to the use of Sanford's new airport for a Sub-base to the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. Thereupon Lieutenant Commander Meade informed the Commission that the United States Naval Air Station of Jacksonville is making a survey of several airports in Central Florida with a view to selecting ~ sites for Sub-bases to the Jackson- ville Station, in which Sanford's new airport is included, and that the Navy Department is requesting the City Commission to grant them the use of the Sanford Airport, provided it is selected for this purpose. Commander Meade also stated that if Sanford's air~ort is selected for a Sub-base, the City would have to convey the property to the Navy Department and the title would remain in the name of the Federal Government as long as the property is used for a Naval Air Base, but revert to the City when such operations cease, and that any additional property needed for the expansion of the airport would be secured by the Federal Government instead of the City; also , stating that the Navy would want the City to continue to completion the WPA project now in progress for certain improvements to the field. The Chairman then informed Commander Meade that the Commanding Officer of the Orlando Air Base had made a request to the City Commission for the use of Sanford's a~rDort, when completed, as an auxiliary landing field for the Orlando Base, which has been granted, and that the Commanding General of the Third Air Force at TamDa had confirmed this request to the Civil Aerenautics Administration in Washington,D.C. Thereupon, Commader Meade advised the Commission that satisfactory arrangements could be made between the Army and Navy Departments, whereby the airport could be transferred from the Army to the Navy, provided it is selected for a sub-base for the Navai Air Station at Jacksonville, stating that there would be no confliction between the two departments in making a request for this transfer, nrovided it was agreeable with the City Commission. Thereupon after careful consideration, and in view of the assurance from ~ommander Meade that there would be no conflictlon between the Army and Navy with respect to the use of Sanford's airport as a sub-base to the United States Naval Air Station'at Jacksonville, instead of an auxiliary landing field for the Orlando Air Base, the Commission advised Commander Meade that the Board would be willing to grant the Navy s request, provided the airport is selected for the purposes as outlined above. There being no further business the meeting adjourned. Attest: City Mayor.
