The City Commission of the City of Sanford, FlOrida, met in special called session
at the City Hall in the City of Sanford, Florida, at 1:00 o'clock P. M. April ~, 1957.

Meeting called to order by the Chairman who announced t hat t he meeting had been called
for the purpose of considering emergency action toward immediately rebuilding the Sanford State
Farmers' Market, which was completely destroyed by fire on this date. .
All members of the Board being present, Commissioner Hlgginbotham then moved the
waiver of the requirement of the #Written Notice" of this called m6eting, which was second-ed
by Commissioner Wilson and carried by unanimous vote of the Commission.
Commissioner Scott then c~ered Resolution No. 892, and mo~ ed its passage and adoption.
Seconded by Commissioner Warner and carried by the following vote of the Commission:

Said Resolution NO. 892 being as follows:
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SANFORD, FLORIDA,
REQUESTING THE CABINET OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO MAKE AVAILABLE
EMERGENCY FUNDS TO BECONSTRUCT THE STATE!FARMERS' MARKET AT S ANFORD,
FLORIDA, RECENTLY DESTROYED.
WHEREAS, On April ~, 1957, the State Farmers Market at Sanford, Florida, 'was destroyed
by fire, at an estimated loss of Two and One-Half Million Dollars, and
WHEREAS, It is the opinion of the City Commission of the City of Sanford, Florida
and the people of Sanford and Seminole County that said State Farmers Market is an integral,
Vital, ard necessary part of the economic welfare of the people of the City of Sanford,
Florida and Seminole County, and
WHEREAS, The loss of said State Farmers Market has criticallyaffected the ability of
the farmers, growers, brokers, and others in the sale and movement of perishable agricultural
commodities from Seminole County and its vicinity, and
WHEREAS, It is the opinion of the City Commission of the City of Sanford, Florida
that untold economic loss will occur in the event said market is not immediately reconstructed,
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED By the City Commission of the City of Sanford, Florida
that the State Cabinet of the State of Florida be and the same .is hereby requested to release
immediate emergency funds for the, reconstruction of the State Farmers Market located at San-
ford, Florida.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to the Cabinet,
the Governor of the State of Florida, the Commissioner of Agriculture, the Director of State
Farmers Markets, and the local Legislative Delegation.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the City
Commission of the City of Sanford, Florida.

Mayor Gatohel next cited the prompt, courageous and efficient action of the Fire De-
partment, Police Depart~ment, Sheriff's office, Constable, Water Department,~ Navy Fire Depart-
ment and others who assisted in combatting the fire at the Farmers Market, which threatened ~he
destruction of the surrounding area, and suggested that they be commended for such efficient
action.
Thereupon Commissioner Hlgginbotha~ offered the following Resolution No. 893, and moved
its passage and adoption. Seconded by Commissioner Wilson and carried by the following vote
of the CommiSsion:

COMMENDING THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND POLICE DEPARTMENT OF THE CITY OF
SANFORD, FLORIDA, THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE OF SEMINOLE COUNTY, LOCAL
CONSTABLES, PERSONNEL OF THE CANFORD NAVAL AIR STATION, AND ALL CITI-
ZENS AND OTHERS, FOR THE PROMPT, EFFICIENT AND COURAGEOUS ACTION IN-
VOLVED IN THE DESTRUCTION OF THE SANFORD FARMER'S MARKET ON APRIL 4,
1957.
WHEBEA~, On April 4, 1957, the State Farmers Market located at Sanford, Florida, was
destroyed by fire, ag an estimated loss of Two and One-Half Million Dollars, and
WHEREAS, In addition to the loss of said Farmers Market, large areas of the City of
Sanford, Florida were threatened with loss and destruction, and
WHEREAS, In the opinion of the City Commission of the City of Sanford, Florida, had
it not been for the prompt courageous and efficient activity and organization of the Police"
and Fire Departments of the City of Sanford, Florida, the Sheriff's Office of Seminole County,
the Constables of Seminole County, Personnel of the Sanford Naval Air Station, and others,
that one of the greatest catastrophes in the history of the City of Sanford could have occurred
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED By the City Commission of the City of Sanford, Florida,
that the Sanford Police and Fire Departments, the Sheriff's Office of Seminole County, the
ConStables of Seminole County, Personnel of the Sanford Naval Air Station, and all others
involved in courageously fighting and stemming the effect of said fire, thus saving large
portions of the City of Sanford from destruction, be and t he same are hereby, commended by
the City Commission of the City of Sa~ ord., .Florida, bosh for itself and the people of said
City.
BE IT FURTHER .RESOLVED That this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the City
Commission of the City of Sanford, Florida and copies thereof furnished to the organizations
specified, and the local press.
PASSED AND ADOPTED This $th day of April, A. D. 1957.
