Commissioner Higginbotham moved to waive the requirement of twenty-four hours
written notice, and to call the meeting into special session. Seconded by commissioner
Wilson and carried by the unanimous vote of the Commission.
City Manager apprised the Commission of the present status as to the acquisition
of'the former Sanford Naval Air Station property by the City of Sanford with reference to
a letter of November l~, 1968, from the General Services Administration, Atlanta, Georgia,
'verifying their determination on the disposal of the property, as follows:
(a) That portion of the former Naval Air Station bounded by Fourth Street
on the North, Von Weller Avenue on the East projected through to Onora
Street, Onora Street on the South; and the project boundary on the West,
has been classified as industrial property and is therefore not available
for transfer to the City as airport property. The City may purchase this
property for the sum of $800,000.
(b) The remaining property, including all utilities on the entire base, is
available for transfer to the City as airport property.
Since the main gate is located on the 150 acres described above, access
throUgh this acreage will be furnished to the City along with airport
property.
The City Manager then summarized for the Commission's consideration his trip to
Washington, ~. C. on November 18, 1968, to confer with the officials of the Federal Aviation
Administration and the General Services Administration.
In view of the information brought back by the City Manager from Washington, Commis-
sioner Higginbotham moved that if the City of Sanford were to obtain only the airport property
it is not possible to operate the airport in a satisfactory mauuer without much of the contort-
merit area being included that is necessary for the airport operation and, therefore, the City
cannot accept General Services Administration's proposal as it now stands; and the City Mana-
ger is instructed to meet on Friday, November 22, 1968, in Miami to discuss this thoroughly
with the Federal Aviation Admiaistration and to so notify General Services Administration of
the City's position; and, once the above letter is worked out between Federal Aviation Admin-
istration and the City of Sanford, that the City compose a similar letter, signed by the Mayor
to be sent to the Vice President of the United States and to Neal Peterson who has promised he
would personally handle it with General Services Administration and Federal Aviation Adminis-
tration. Seconded by Commissioner Raborn and carried unanimously.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned.
