030689-Workshop SessionMINUTES City Commission, Sanford, Florida March 6 19 89 The City Commission of the City of Sanford, Florida, met in Workshop Session in the City Manager's Conference Room of the City Hall in the City of Sanford, Florida, at 4:00 o'clock P. M. on March 6, 1989. Present: Mayor-Commissioner Bettye D. Smith Commissioner Whitey Eckstein Commissioner Bob Thomas Commissioner A.A. McClanahan Commissioner Lon Howell City Manager Frank A. Faison City Clerk Janet R. Donahoe Absent: City Attorney William L. Colbert The meeting was called to order by the Chairman. The Chairman announced that the subject for this workshop would be a discussion of short and long term goals for the City of Sanford. She stated that it would be a very informal meeting, with input from all Commissioners and staff present regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the City of Sanford. The following STRENGTHS were listed as ASSETS of the City, together with WEAKNESSES listed as LIABILITIES: STRENGTHS (Assets) 1.) The Lakefront & Downtown Historical District 2.) Sanford's Heritage 3.) Sense of Community 4.) Sanford's Citizens 5.) Cultural Diversity 6.) Cohesiveness of the Management Team 7.) Attitude/Patriotism 8.) Unique 9.) Population Changes 10.) Regional Economy 11.) Open Land 12.) Park Land 13.) Co-operation with County 14.) Central Florida Regional Hospital 15.) Educational Opportunities 16.) Real World Diversity 17.) Highway 46 (4 lane) 18.) Airport The Commission discussed the above elaborating on specific items. The Commission proposed a list of 1) A River Walk 2) Complete 201 Plan 3) WEAKNESSES (Liabilities) 1.) Population Changes 2.) Transportation 3.) Tax Base 4.) Enclaves 5.) "Me-Ism" Attitude 6.)
