061201 Strategic Planning ws MINUTES City Commission, Sanford, Florida STRATEGIC PLANNING WORK SESSION JUNE 12 E00014148 The City Commission of the City of Sanford, Florida met in Strategic Planning Work Session on Tuesday, Jtme 12, 2001, at 12:00 P.M. in the Betlye D. Smith Cultural Arts Building, 119 West 5th Street, Sanford, Florida. Present: Mayor-Commissioner Brady Lessard Commissioner Whitey Eckstein Commissioner Velma H. W'dliams Commissioner Randy Jones (present at 12:40) Commissioner Art Woodruff City Manager Anthony VanDerworp City Clerk Janet R. Dougherty Absent: City Attorney William L. Colben The Chairman called the meeting to order. Barry Schreiber, President, Summit Consulting Group, reported the purpose of the Strategic Planning Workshop was to provide avenue for Sanford's City Commission and Staff to discuss relevant strategic topics determined prior to the Workshop and to reach consensus wherever possible for direction and actions needed to move forward on the strategic topics under discussion. The topics selected for discussion are: the continued improvement and development of the Georgetown and Goldsboro neighborhoods; the revitalization and preservation of existing neighborhoods to foster neighborhood pride, neighborhood character, and a community unity; determining the desirability of having a predetermined look and theme for the 17-92 corridor within the City of Sanford, with the express purpose of having a more visually appealing and a more vibrant business corridor; the desirability of having a marketing and public relations campaign to boost the City's image which includes making the City "a place of destination" and "a vibrant place of commerce"; the need for additional inCastructure facilities and the means of raising the money to purchase property and a building; and the continued development of a Hotel/Conference Center along the lakefront as one step in maximi~ing the potential for the City and turning the lakefiront into a more active area for ongoing events.
