022414 mica minutesMINUTES FEBRUARY 24, 2014 ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION CONGRESSMAN MICA AND SANFORD HOUSING AUTHORITY Present: Congressman John Mica Mayor Jeff Triplett, City of Sanford Vice Mayor Velma Williams, City of Sanford Melvin Philpot, Sanford Housing Authority Victoria Murphy, Sanford Housing Authority Twila Roberts, Sanford Housing Authority Ronita Sanders, Office of Congresswoman Brown Buz Ausley, U.S. HUD Victoria Main, HUD Norton Bonaparte, City Manager, City of Sanford Andrew Thomas, City of Sanford Commissioner Lee Constantine, Seminole County Shannon Young, Seminole County Housing Authority Kristopher Cruzada, Seminole County Housing Authority Lindsay Oyewale, Seminole County Housing Authority Penny Seater, Habitat for Humanity Traci Houchin, Deputy City Clerk, City of Sanford Congressman John Mica called the meeting to order at 9:44 AM. Congressman Mica held a round table discussion pertaining to the Sanford Housing Authority (SHA). He explained that public housing in the City of Sanford continues to frustrate him. The reason for this discussion is to gather some opinions on how to move forward. Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett said that he too is frustrated with the process and is looking forward to any updates. Congressman Mica asked Mr. Melvin Philpot, Chairman of the Sanford Housing Authority, to state the direction that the SHA is moving in and Mr. Philpot said that their goal is to build safe, decent and affordable housing. MINUTES FEBRUARY 24, 2014 ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION CONGRESSMAN MICA AND SANFORD HOUSING AUTHORITY Congressman Mica asked if the SHA has a long term plan in place and what has been taken into consideration for improving upon the public housing. Mr. Philpot explained that the SHA is working with a consultant for long range planning. Congressman Mica recommended that the Sanford Housing Authority get out of public housing and consider other options such as consolidating with Seminole County or divesting some of the property. The meeting adjourned at 11:06 AM.
