CITY COMMISSION CHAMBERS MEMBERS PRESENT: Tom Speer Cathryn Welch Eddie Keith Joe Dennison Ben Dyal Leon Brooks Helen Stairs Jerry Johnson John LeRoy OTHERS PRESENT: Jay Marder, City Planner Bettie Sonnenberg, Land Development Coordinator Bill Simmons, Director of Engineering and Planning Marion Anderson, Recording Secretary The meeting was called to order at 7:09 P.M. by Chairman Dennison The item on the Agenda consisted on Mr. Steve Cook, Director of Central Florida Regional Airport, making a presentation as to the relationship between the Airport and the Planning and Zoning Commission. Mr. Steve Cook, Director of Central Florida Regional Airport, showed a video relative to marketing at the Airport. Mr. Cook stated that there are 2,000 acres of property, and there are 900,000 square feet of existing developed space which is 99% leased. The Central Florida Regional Airport can handle any aircraft that flies. There is a possibility of expanding the main runway from 8,000 feet to 10,000 feet to capture the international market. On one end there is about 1500 feet that could be used for an extension and on the other end approximately 1,00.0 feet. 10,000 feet is ideal for a runway. The 6,000 foot runway has no expansion plans. The Airport is looking at the possibility of opening a third runway some day. It is being reviewed by FAA and will be 3,500 feet for small planes. Mr. Cook stated that 2% of the airports in the country have better airfield facilities than Sanford. Terminal facilities at Sanford is being reviewed now by the Airport Authority for improvement. Mr. Cook stated that there will be over $3 year. Another project driven by growth is with radar scope. It will be constructed million in the need for by August of grants this a new tower 9 -1 and in MINUTES PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION MEETING OF JANUARY 3, 1991 PAGE 2 full use by November of 91. He stated that they would like to get an arf vehicle, a fire prevention vehicle that has foam, water, etc. The cost of the fire prevention vehicle is $310,000 and has been funded by FAA. Mr. Cook stated that obtaining better access is critical. DOT has funded a road that will tie into Marquette and are reviewing with the County as to what it will take to fix this road up. What is funded now will terminate at Marquette; possibly to tie into Silver Lake Drive. Mr. Cook noted that there are approximately 1,400 employees on the airport now, the industrial park produces the money that the airport needs to operate.
