AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF SANFORD, FLORIDA,
A~ENDING CHAPTER 16~ OF 'THE CODE OF THE CITY
OF SANFORD, FLORIDA, THE SA~ BEING KNOWIq AS
THE MECHANICAL CODE, SAID A},~ND~ENT~ ADOPTING
THE 1977 REVISION TO THE 1976 EDITION OF THE
STANDARD MECHANICAL CODE, AS AMENDED WITH THE
FOLLOWING AMENDMENTS: DELETION OF THE SECTION
SETTING FORTH FEES: A~ENDS~ENTS OF THAT SECTION
RELATIVE TO FURNACE ROOMS TO PROVIDE WHEN AN
APPLIANCE IS LOCATED IN A FURNACE ROOM THE ROOM
SHALL HAVE AN OPENING SUFFICIENT IN SIZE TO
PEPsNIT REMOVAL OF THE LARGEST PIECE OF THE
FURNACE IN SUCH ROOM; AMENDMENT OF THAT SECTION
RELATIVE TO PLENUM CHA~jBERS PROHIBITING THE USE
OF SA~ME AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF A DUCT SYSTEM
UNLESS NON-COMBUSTIBLE I~ATERIAL IS USED, PRO-
HIBITING THE USE OF SUCH CHAMBERS FOR STORAGE
AND OCCUPATIONAL PURPOSES AND, PROHIBITING THE
USE OF PUBLIC EXIT HALLS AND STAIRWAY ENCLOSURES
CONNECTING TWO OR MORE STORIES AS PLENUMS.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE CITY OF SANFORD, FLORIDA:
SECTION 1. That Section 16%-1 of Chapter 16~ entitled
~'Mechanical Code" of the Sanford City Code is hereby amended to
read as follows:
Sec. 16~-1. ADOPTED.
The 1977 revision to the 1976 edition of the Standard
Mechanical Code, as prepared by the Southern Building Code Congress
International, Inc., as amended, is hereby adopted by the City, and
a copy of same as amended is filed in the office of the City Clerk
as a matter of permanent record of the City, and the matters and
contents therein are made a part of this chapter by reference as
fully and completely as if set forth herein, and such copy shall
remain on file in said office available for public inspection.
SECTION 2. That Sec. 16~-l.lof Chapter !6~fentitled
"Mechanical Code~' of the Sanford City Code is hereby amended to
read as follows:
Sec. 16~-1.1 A~ND~NTS
Section 106 of th.e1976edition of the Standard Mechanical
Code,l.theSame'being enti.tled '~Fees'~, is hereby deleted in its
entirety.
Sub-section (A) 3 of Section 303.2 of the Standard
Mechanical Code is hereby amended to read as follows:
"(A)3o Where such appliance is located in a furnace
room, such room shall have an opening or door or
passageway thereto large. enough to permit removal
of thelargest piece of the furnace in such room"
Seco 512 ehtitled "Plenum Chambers" of the Standard Mechan-
ical Code is hereby amended to read as follows:
"No room attic, void, hollow or concealed space
shall be used as an integralpart of a duct
system, or "Plenum" unless the component parts
of such space is constructed entirely of non-
combustible material and/or property protected
by means of fire dampers and/or fan cut-off controls
so as to restrict the spread of fire, and arranged
so as to protect thefire-resistiveness of the
assembly, for exception see Section 509. Such
chambers shall not be used for storage or occu-
pational purposes. Public Exit halls in hotels,
hospitals, institutions and similar occupancies
and in multi-family houses shall not be used as
Plenums. Stairway enclosures connecting two or more
stories shall notbe used as Plenums.
Combustible material shall not be used in Plenums
unless it is properly protected or meets all standards
of Class I Duct Material as defined by U.L. 181".
SECTION 3. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in
conflict herewith be and the same are hereby repealed.
SECTION 4. That this ordinance shall become effective
immediately upon its passage and adoption.
