(FS 286.0105) MEETING MINUTES 1. CALL TO ORDER / WELCOME Meeting called to order by Mr. Eddie Cochran at 4:08 PM. Mr. Cochran shared a story about a recent death of a family member that relates to the youth violence that is plaguing the cities throughout the nation and reinforces why the MBK initiative is so important. The Advisory Cormnittee took a moment to acknowledge the tragedy. Mr. Cochran read the MBK mission statement. 2. ROLL CALL PRESENT: Eddie Cochran Committee Chairman Thelisha Thomas Committee Member Rose Washington Committee Member Charles Wright Committee Co -Chair ABSENT: Fritz Voltaire Committee Member Sylvester Wynn Committee Member Lowman Oliver Committee Member STAFF: Andrew Thomas Sheena Britton Captain Ray Irvin 3. APPROVAL OF MEETING MINUTES Ms. Thomas made a motion to approve the October Meeting Minutes. Seconded by Mr. Wright and carried unanimously by vote of the Advisory Committee as follows: Thelisha Thomas Aye Sylvester Wynn Absent Eddie Cochran Aye Lowman Oliver Absent Rose Washington Aye Charles Wright Aye Fritz Voltaire Absent 4. OLD BUSINESS Mr. Cochran stated that the intention was not to change the original Sanford Future Claimers Action Plan, however to reorganize it and to align it with the four pillars that were discussed; Physical, Intellectual, Emotional and Social. A large amount of data was collected and it is important that it reflects the current vision that the MBK has, also, to find out if there are opportunities to reduce some of the intricate details and history provided in the original plan. Ms. Washington discussed the vision / mission statement and requested that it tie into "this" community. Ms. Thomas gave clarification on the vision verse mission statement via definition and recommended that just a few words be added to the end of the mission statement. Mr. Cochran read aloud the vision statement "The Sanford MBK Community is dedicated to building effective mentorship programs, reduce youth violence and measurably improve the lives of boys and young men of color to ensure all youth reach their full potential. Mr. Cochran read aloud the mission statement " The Sanford MBK Community is focused on taking a holistic approach to improve the community by creating programs centered around the following areas of Human Development: Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Social". The committee had discussion regarding adding "spirituality" as a pillar. The committee agreed to list spirituality under the "Emotional Pillar" as a sub category, to remove the yellow sections (details of the city and how it originated), to keep the national spotlight as is and the current state as is. The committee discussed updating the data under "Physical". The Committee discussed further reviewing the plan at an additional meeting. Mr. Thomas stated that the Advisory Committee can meet, the meeting must be publically noticed. The committee agreed that the pillars are acceptable as outlined. The information within the pillars should be refreshed and to distinguish between programs and activities. No action taken. Mr. Cochran recapped the different program categories. • Physical Health/Education - 5K/Sports - Nutritional Education; Food pantries • Tntellectnal Tutoring/Reading • Emotional Religion/Spirituality/Mentoring • Social Criminal Justice/Public Safety - Social Enrichment 5. NEW BUSINESS Mr. Thomas updated the Committee on MBK events that have happened nationwide. The committee discussed meeting again November 20, 2019 at 4PM.
